Keyless entry Brain replacement - Hawk Alarm RV101

Having spent a fair amount if time over the last couple of years looking at keyless entry systems, I finally decided to get er done.  I contacted the web site that was posted by Rob.matthew (the company that they used when replacing their system), and asked the CSR at the web site about the difference between the brand that they carry and the other brands ie: Viper.  She was very polite and said that she didn't know but I could call the owner of the company and he would be pleased to chat with me.  Cool.

I called the owner - a nice guy by the name of Jessie Clark.  I asked him the same question - what is the difference b/w........... and he said he didn't know.  He is the owner of the company that makes the key pad for the keyless entry and sells the "brain" part to the RV industry as a package.  He purchases the Brain and resells it.  Didn't recall who the Mfg is.  Said he needed to be able to sell the package and has sold more key pads since he started to sell the brain too.

Having called numerous manufacturers, distributors, and local shops, they all said the same things.  The less expensive ones are from China and are crap and the more expensive ones are built better.  However, none could tell me what or how it was better.  I found systems from $15.00 to $500.00+ and eventually gave up asking the question.

We ended up buying a Viper 3606V ( 89.99+/-) and was told all of the wiring for these units are the same so.......................We shall see.
We purchased the viper brand as it is the #1 seller in the country and the reviews I read from numerous websites on the unit we bought were very good.

I'll get it in the next day or two and get it installed.  Will provide and update with pics.

This is the final piece in getting our Ol Girl back to a "Fully" functional FT.  Keeping my fingers crossed that she stays this way for a while.  ;D

Well I have given up on the Viper and will return it to Amazon.  The Viper wiring diagram only matches to Power, overhead light and ground.  The labeling language is Greek to me.  I have contacted Viper customer support, to no avail as these units are to be installed only by professionally trained people and can not get wire by wire matchups.  Have contacted a number of local car accessory installers and they all will be happy to install for us with a minimum of 3 to 4 hours of shop time and I must bring the coach to them - no house calls.  Just getting too complicated.

Have contacted FT re: purchasing the replacement part they have to see if they could provide wire match ups but they can not.  Sooooo.

Have contacted Matthew, of this forum, to see if we can follow in their path.

Scott and Carol - not sure if this helps, but it is the schematic page from our coach for the Hawk 101

The most obnoxious thing we found about that system is that the window sensors in the bedroom were glued high up under the valences and impossible to remove to change the batteries without damaging the sensor casings.

And the system failed in an alarm state when the batteries in those sensors were low.  The neighbors "loved" our alarm going off in the middle of the night...

Hi Michelle-

I know nothing about sensors on windows - don't think we have them.  I have attached pics that show the wiring labels from the Viper system and the back of the Hawk.  The language Viper uses does not relate to the Hawk wiring except for "ground", "power" and "parking lights".  I am sure that it will work, just don't know what to connect to what and Viper customer support is no help.

I am a whipped dog on this one.  :headwall:  :headwall:

Scott,

My build is 15 #s earlier than yours so I'm assuming our systems are the same.  My Hawk Alarm wiring diagram does not have a rev A (it's blank), and and the wiring is slightly different than Michelle.  If you don't have it, I can send you a copy.

I pulled all my windows and replaced the gaskets.  I didn't see any alarm sensors when I did.

I asked FOT about a replacement about a year ago and they said it was available.  About $220 if I remember correctly.  I thought it was another unit that was exactly the same but didn't pursue it.

Unfortunately the Hawk RV101 drawing does not match the wiring pasted to the back of the "brain".

Where would I find the "brain" for our keyless entry system? Am thinking about installing KL550.

There is a panel in front of the passenger front seat that is held in place by Velcro.  Pull the bottom of that panel at the bottom by the steps gently but firmly and that panel will pull out.  There is a lip on top of the panel that goes under the dash board.  The "brain" is a black box about 3" x 4" behind the panel.  There is also a yellow square reprogram button behind a paper sticker on front of the black box/"brain".

Good luck

Good luck.

The drawing with Rev A I posted shows applicability to build number 5947 and newer, although I imagine there could be some overlap either side of that build number depending on when the Hawk 101 was actually installed in the coach during its build.

Gave up -

Have one fob that locks and unlocks doors.  Better than when I started.  Could not get the other fob programmed as the Power from the Key/ACC does not seem to have power getting to the new KL550 brain.  Along with that there does not appear to have power going to the Parking lights and then to the KL550.  Although the parking light functioning in not critical it too does not energize.  Have tested with multimeter and test light everything I can find and can not trace.  Have opened the appropriate drawings in our owners manual.

I'm done - I'm tired of messing with it.

Will have FT take a look at it when I get there next year - maybe.

Would like to thank those that supported me in this endeavor.  ;D

Replaced the original Keyless Entry system with AutoLoc KL550. The system lists for $90.00 from Johnny Law Motors - 5 Function Keyless Entry with Birt | johnnylawmotors.com, but we got it around Christmas on sale for $67.00. We added a $9 fuse holder to get it above $75 to get free shipping.
This system works great; locks and unlocks from 90 paces away! We did not use all of the functions such as ignition interrupt and horn.

I am attaching my installations notes and related schematics.

I also purchased the AutoLoc KL550.  I could not get it to work either, until I read the small print on the installation diagram, which says "The BROWN/BLUE wire is used to adjust polarity for this system. the recommended configuration, which also reflects per the wiring diagram provided, is based on a negative trigger system so this wire must be grounded."

Once I attached the Blue/Brown wire to the Black ground wire, everything was perfect. I used the Orange/Black wire, representing channel 3 to correspond to the "second press" wire on the Hawk, to unlock the bay doors.

Lock button pressed - lights flash once, entry and bay doors lock
Unlock button pressed - lights flash twice, only entry door unlocks
Third button (marked Roman numeral one) - bay doors and entry door unlock

Hope this helps if anyone is still having problems with installation.

My keyless entry hasn't worked since we bought the coach and I finally got around to fixing it.  Just finished installing the AutoLok KL550.

On the remote:
Lock button locks everything - red light starts flashing
Unlock botton unlocks door - red light stops flashing
"I" button unlocks door and bays - red light keeps flashing
You can also reverse the two unlock functions/buttons by swapping the wires.

I don't plan to mount the red light where it is visible because of the conflicting flashes.

Attached is my wiring diagram with function annotations.  Slightly different than shown earlier in the thread.

Thanks to the pathfinders above who made this possible.  Hope this helps somebody else along the way.

Thanks for posting how you wired the kl550 keyless system. I hooked mine up the same way on my 1999 U 295 and it worked the same as yours.
I am posting this to let others know that this system and your wiring will work on other coach's also.
Thanks again

Thanks for the feedback.

I did go ahead and mount the flashing red light on the co-pilot front window pillar just above where the alarm brain is locked in the the front dash.  I figure anything that might act as a deterrent to someone making mischief can't be all bad.

Update on this thread.  My Trekmate finally cratered, so I ordered the Autoloc KL550 on eBay, shipping incl. for $55.  Installed it today using Rich's wiring schematic.  Took me about an hour to R&R, except for one glitch.  For the 2001 wiring, I had to connect the KL500 brown/blue wire together with the black to FT black ground.  All works perfectly again and I have a solid state system with 2 remotes for the price of one replacement remote.  Thanks to Rich for the info.  Woody.

edit:  I re-read the prior entries and want to give credit to Randy Moody (Moodmeister), as he'd already diagnosed the wiring issue I faced.

Another thumbs up for the AutoLoc KL550:  the range of the remote is beyond expectations.  The Trekmate system had a range of 10 feet maximum with a brand new remote battery...i.e. I couldn't unlock the bays when standing outside the driver's side window and I'd fiddled with the antenna orientation several times with no change.  Today I tested the range of the newly installed KL550 during a walk with the dog.  Over 300 yards and the lock/unlock worked fine....all parking/marker lights flash once for unlock, twice for lock.  Happy camper.  Stay safe and sane out there.  Woody.
