Turning engine for valve adjustment

I wanted to adjust the valves on my 8.3 cummins, but did not have a turning tool. The PO did mark the harmonic balancer.

I first took off the hyd pump belt, then unloosen the 4 bolts holding the pulley to the balancer then remove pulley.

This will reveal 4 bolts spaced about 5" apart, simply put a 18mm socket on one of the bolts and you can easily turn engine
over.

Only takes a few minutes.

How about the second part?  :D  How far out were they? Exhaust vs intake? Miles/years since previous adjustment?

When you reinstall that pulley, spend some time ensuring it is concentric. Mine was mounted slightly off center and was causing bouncing in the tensioner. Use a piece of chalk or dial indicator to find the high spot. Chalk/wax marker workers fine, just start engine up and move it closer till it hits on the high spot.

I made a thread about the process a while back.
