Hello,
I changed mine out and it seems there is a button that you will need to push down and that will release the shaft when you pull.  You should NOT force it out.  This head light switch is an easy change out.  It should take you longer to go the auto parts store than it will be to get er done.  Just look it over pretty good and I think you will find the button and then it is all down hill.  Best of travels.

You have to clock the shaft to the flat side towards the button then push the button and pull out. With the headlight switch on you can see the flat sides you have to feel for the button. The headlight switch must be all the way out before pushing the button.

John on the bottom side of the dimmer where there is metal you feel a small round metal button. Pull the dimmer knob out as far as it will go then push the button all the way and it should release the knob shaft. The harness unplugs and away you go.
