Exhaust fumes

Last month at the Q we were running the diesel generator watching tv, when all of sudden the propane alarm went off sending me through the roof, I shut off the generator and opened the windows  and check all the systems and aired out the Coach, waited 15 min and reset the alarm and it would not switch to blinking lite waited a few more and it reset. This happened twice while we were there. Could the fumes from the generator set the alarm off.  Any thoughts
Thanks Andy

Andy,

How old is the detector? Most have a max of 10 year life.  Usually the detector has a date code on the back of it.

As they age, many start giving false alarms.

Not sure Brett and thanks I will check it out. After thought why would it do it only when the Generator is running?

Hi Andy...was the coach closed up or windows open?  Nice puzzle!

You imagine alarm trigger might be coincidence with generator, so think another cause of the alarm? .....you aired out the coach and that solved it but the airing out would have solved regardless if cause was generator or other.  I assume you have a diesel powered generator.

I had a strange cause once....the shower p-trap dried during storage, fumes from gray tank triggered alarm. Took some thinking and disbelief but poured water in shower drain, problem solved as i recall.    Interesting to see what you find.

Also found what Brett reported on age of the sensor, good idea on that

Hi Andy, you didn't mention if there was a recent bathroom encounter of the second kind. Ours went off while a visitor was making use of the facility.  Good thing they were just finishing up or it might have scared the **** out out of them.  It did raise quite an alarm though and lots of commotion. Apparently it is sensitive to other gasses as well.  Good time to change it.

My brother's dog activated his alarm by passing gas while sleeping by it.

Ours went off while DW was cleaning and spraying cleaning products. Scared her! We updated the alarm as well and had it checked for leaks as it was at that time new to us. Good for heart testing!

A sulfating old battery will set off the propane alarm.

Absolutely.  I'm not sure if it was the old sulfating battery or the low voltage from the house batteries that were 10 years old that caused my propane detector to alarm intermittently but new house batteries solved the problem.  BTW, Following Michelle's sage advice I replaced all the alarms in the coach 2 years ago so, in my case, it was probably not an alarm old age issue.
