Convex mirror

During a trip to Palm Dessert last October, my driver side convex mirror fell off somewhere on I-5. I taped a temp mirror on for the rest of the trip. I received the replacement from Remco and when I remove the winter cover off the GV one of my first jobs will be installing the new mirror.
My question is, how do I remove the old mirror plate from the housing, only the glass fell off and there is a black mirror housing somehow attached.
Thanks for any advise.

Geoff,

On our '97 that plate is attached to the movement motor with industrial strength Velcro.  We had to pull & tug till it let go. It may be different on your '94 though.

thanks for the quick reply.
Pre 2000 are supposed to be glue-on, but you have a 1997 and it is Velcro, go figure! I think mine is glued on but to get something in behind the cup-like shroud seems quite difficult, Ramco instructions say to use a warm putty knife but I don't see how the knife can get in there?
I was thinking of using my heat gun gently on the front plate?

Geoff,

I lost the mirror on my driver's side top hat. Well, not actually lost; it started vibrating and I stopped. When I touched it, it came off in my hand.

I am very interested in this thread, because it looks like it had been attached with some kind of caulk/adhesive. Just need to find out what to use to glue it back.

Guess I should contact Ramco because I broke one of my adjustment switches, so will replace both of them.

Keep those responses coming,

On our 1997 U295, the mirror is attached to a metal plate with velcro. The metal plate is attached to the ring on the motors with adhesive caulk.

In high winds in Nebraska, the adhesive caulk let go and we lost the mirror and mounting place. I put in the new motors, then attached the new metal place with the adhesive caulk. The next day, I attached the mirror with the velcro.

I got all parts from FOT. They used our build number to get the proper parts.

I think what I will do is try and pry the skirt up and out from the backing mechanism ( Velcro connection ) and if this does not release it then I will try to get a warm putty knife behind the mirror skirt.
Has anyone performed either method? and - what # silicone is used?
Thank s to all

Mine came loose and I re glued it with clear silicone and used a piece of duct tape to hold it in place until everything dried, worked great.

We have to recognize that we are dealing with very aged plastic parts.  When I attempted to work on my lower mirror I succeeded in breaking more parts as I attempted to separate Velcro and cut caulking.  In the end I ordered an entirely new motor assembly.

Are all of the mirrors attached with velcro? My passenger side mirror has been whacked by so many bushes in campgrounds that the heater in the flat mirror has stopped working. The heater in the convex mirror still works though. I tried to figure out how to get the flat mirror off so I could see if maybe the heater just came unplugged or something. It seems to be attached a lot more securely than velcro. I didn't want to break the mirror and the heater isn't very important so I decided to wait until I'm in Nacogdoches and have Foretravel take it off to investigate.

Geoff, check measurements of the new mirror against the opening of frame as when I had Remco send me a new one a few years back they sent one for a C Coach (wrong shape) then sent the right one, and I cannot remember how it is affixed ???? Dumb Brother hey?

Good quality product, had them in black on the Airstreams. I like the chrome ones with the remote adjust and signals. I think my lower mirrors are bedded in velcro. My files show these are fairly new.
