replacing propane shut off valve part number

I was want to order a propane shut off valve and need part number? Would FT have that valve or should I check propane suppliers. Thank you

I drove to our local propane dealer and they took one look and then showed me which shutoff I needed. It was just the five lobe knob and stem assembly that consisted of a brass fitting with a hard white nylon "plug" sticking out.
The valve seat was permanently mounted in the tank.
I have my old one here in my hand. The brass hex is 5/8" and it has a left hand thread. (to remove turn clockwise)
When you replace with a new assembly make sure you rotate the knob to the fully-open position before threading the assembly into your tank. Otherwise you will destroy the nylon plug end.

Don't forget the yellow gas use Teflon tape on the threads!!

Main propane tank shut off removal requires an empty tank.  Those with tanks that have a capped-off "liquid valve" can quickly empty & recover liquid into another tank.  Without liquid valve, dumping vapor takes a very long time.
Use a good propane fill shop for new valve.

Our tank was, fortunately, empty. I was trying to eliminate any possible leaks in a 25 year old system. Turned out our tank propane leaked out the bottom screen on one of our regulators.
I had replaced the fill valve, the shutoff, and ultimately the regulator, after trying the propane leak locator liquid. I actually saw the fumes coming out the bottom of the regulator when the sun was over my shoulder. Reassembled with gas Teflon tape after disassembly required to remove the solenoid shutoff and replacing it with a 3" pipe nipple.
Our tank apparently no longer leaks. After two years we still had almost a half tank after two winters in storage and innumerable camping trips.

Are you needing the mechanical valve that screws into the tank or the electrically controlled solenoid valve used on older coaches that ties in with the propane detector?

It should be a standard valve, at least on ours. The tricky part is removing the valve from the tank, most propane places will not dink around with them because of F.D. regs. I had to run the coach out into the boonies and open the bleeder to make sure I'd drained the tank before a RV shop would attempt the change-out.  Even then, when we opened up the valve at the shop, it spit, big time! A special (hand-made, usually) wrench is needed to remove & replace the valve. Not one of the most fun things we've done. :-[  ::)

It would seem to me that you could repack that shutoff. That valve shuts off both ways I am told. Has packing fore and aft. Planning on having my son repack mine this summer as it leaks in the open position. No leak with the valve closed but it leaks a bit with the valve open.
