Generator Sound proofing breakdown

The hi density foam insulation attached to the inside of the Powertech Generator since 2001 has been  deteriorating, flaking off and making a big mess.  I've checked the usual sources (Home Dep; Lowes; Ace; Grainger, etc)  with no luck. I've called Powertech at least 9x and the parts person doesn't like to answer his phone.  Hate to leave it that way....need a kind soul to offer some guidance.

I had the same problem and solved it by removing all the insulation from the top, sides and rear of the box. Also the front removable access panal. It's a little tight in there to work but it can be done. Some of the insulation came out in large sheets while some just fell apart. It takes some time but your labor is free, right.
Afterwards I hardly noticed any increase in noise and was glad to get rid of a possible problem caused by the flaking insulation.

Ive gotten some sound deadening material from Dynamat. I replaced what the raccoons ripped out from around the engine.They make it for under hood insulation for hot rods. Not cheap but good stuff..

I talked to the parts people at Powertech. They told me it would take two sheets of the mat they sell but that it doesn't make much difference to the sound.

I've removed the old stuff, badly deteriorated, but can't check the sound yet. We have other problems with the genset, have to fix those first.

That flaking insulation had my generator radiator mostly plugged up . Couldn't see daylight through it.

Try EZ Cool in Texas. I used their insulation in our engine compartment. Looks nice, works as well as any other, fire resistant, non-shedding, aluminized facing, lightweight, and not terribly expensive.
Their aluminum faced tape is absolutely terrific! Worth the price for seams.

You might try Peel & Seal.  It comes in 8" wide rolls
at Lowe's, The Homeless Depot, etc. Two layers of it
is commonly used in auto restoration, customs and hot rods.  Some guys even put foil bubble-pak over it for extra sound deadening and heat reflection, although it's foil-faced already.

It's similar to Eterna Bond but much cheaper. I'll probably redo my generator enclosure with it.

FWIW,
After replacing the insulation for the same reason, removing the Generator makes this exercise a breeze.
Try to service the rest of the systems in the Generator dog house. 
(fresh belts, mounts, hoses, etc., etc.)  pc
