Replacing D2 Governor

When removing and installing the D2 Governor, are the plugs and air hoses installed dry? If installed with a sealant, what sealant is used. Thanks

You can use teflon tape, permatex thread sealant, anything you would use to seal pipe threads.

Teflon tape is frowned upon in air systems. Several people have found pieces of tape clogging valves. Pematex is what I use.

What Ken and Craneman said.

A piece of yellow gas tape that had migrated to one of the HWH six pack solenoid valves was the cause of an extremely frustrating leveling problem we had in 2011.

I get what your saying about the tape but the trick is to put it on properly.Every use for the tape on any water piping or gas or
air would have the same problem if you put gobbs of it on and then use a cheater pipe to tighten it.Use a brass fitting if you can,
the soft brass will seal without tape.

We only use Teflon sealant, not tape anymore.
And the D2's open exhaust port can allow problematic water & dirt to enter D2.  We use a barb fitting with a vertical length of hose to keep the vent protected, but still open to the atmosphere.

If one is worried about dirt/trash entering the D2 exhaust port (I'm not), they make little filtered protective plugs that screw into the port.

A trick that I have used, when I replaced a D2, was to do the pipe connection before mounting the new D2.  With the D2 loose in my hand, it is was way easier to get the threaded connectors to alien, start and I got a couple of turns of the nut.  Then I mounted the D2 to the frame, and then tightened the connectors.

Does anyone know a way of testing a new D2 governor with out actually installing it? The reason for my asking is I had a brand new D2 installed at Bern'd and it was defective from the start. Locking the brakes at FT dump station. Very embarrassing.

The Meritor d2 governor we received from FOT parts came with a breather assembly screwed into the exhaust port. The governor and the breather assembly are pictured in a Governor article posted on the Beamalarm webpage. Has anyone used this breather assembly?

Larry,

If the replacement D2 you received has a breather in the exhaust port, I would leave it there.  It certainly won't hurt anything...might discourage wasps from trying to nest there.  It is probably similar to the ones pictured in the link I posted above.

To test the d2 governor while removed you could get an air regulator with a gauge, hook it up to the port for the signal line and in used ports plugged and see when it starts putting air out the port to the unloaders
