sealer for roof +

I know I have read here about sealing tape AND sealer in a tube. I have a few spots that have a bit of a crack that looks like it could use sealing. I cannot remember the names of the stuff and don't want to use sealer that will let water thru. Will someone please advise? Lowes here in Cookeville, TN found me a dome cover for the shower skylight and had it shipped from KIllene(sp?) might need tape for that...

I have used EternaBond tape for several different roof applications.  Not only for stopping leaks but as a preventative.  Once you apply it there is no easy way of getting it off and it will last for many many years.

X2 on EternaBond tape - and for the best sealant in a tube: Dicor (either Self-Leveling or Non-Leveling).

I had some blisters and a few bubbles in the roof and I have a friend with a 98 who just had his roof done  at Xtreme for some cracking and plain wearing out.  The old FT gave you a lifetime warranty to the first owner on the fiberglass but alas, there are not many original owners left.  I would look at the roof a lot closer and see if you have other issues and maybe plan for a visit to a place that can sand and fill the cracks and also I would coat the roof to prevent it in the future.

As a DIY fix, I have used both Dicor and 3M 5200 urethane caulk for quick fixes on roof cracks and trim leaks. The key is using a UV resistant, urethane caulk rather than acrylic or silicone caulk. Urethane caulks have much better adhesion if the roof surface is prepared properly. I think 5200 can be considered a permanent fix.

I also had Xtreme in NAC do a complete refurb, general repair and paint on the roof. A roof paint job stops the yucky chalking from running down the sides and protects the fiberglass on the roof. After five years the roof still looks brand new and is very easy to clean. Cost was under $2000.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Eternabond and Dicor were the words I had forgotten. I have used 3M 5200 for other purposes but you have to be careful where you put it. You can pry 4200 apart from itself - but not 5200!

I agee.  I would NOT use 5200 on anything that ever may have to come apart. 

3M 4000UV is a reasonable alternative.

I have Dicor and 3M 4000 UV ( the 4000 series).  Dicor seems to take much longer to set up, it is tacky for much longer than the 3M goo and it seems to attract dirt and look dirty compared to the 3M stuff.  Is one better than the other?  On the roof where it is not seen maybe Dicor.

As far as I know, they are chemically the same-- just slightly different colors.  Would choose the one that more closely matches your roof color.

I h\ave never used the 3M 4000 but based on its MSDS it looks like it would be fine. I have used the Sika and it is also a good product.

If faster surface cure (skinning over) of the Dicor or other urethane caulk is needed to prevent dust or dirt contamination, spray with misted water (windex bottle).after application. Urethanes are moisture cured. They draw moisture from the atmosphere so if you are in a very dry climate they cure very slowly.

You can use stove alcohol for clean up of 5200 or Sika flex. It won't hurt the fiberglass &  with enough patience & practice you can lay a clean bead.
