Roof Coating

Anyone have recent experience with roof coating they would like to share ? Was up on the roof measuring for solar panels, and have quiet a few cracks showing, might as well get it done first .

If you were to do a search on roof coatings you will find 2 major coatings used.  One applied by FOT and one applied by Extreme.  Both have pros and cons.  We had ours done by FT a little over 3 years ago and are quite pleased with the results so far.  Cracks should be inspected and eliminated if required.  We had a few cracks in the roof as well.  FOT cleaned out the scratches filled them with resin covered with fiberglass tape then faried the surface the coated.  The coating FOT used is applied to .012+/- inches and is kinda like rhino liner.  I forget what Extreme uses.  Some like the Extreme and some the FOT.

Hope this helps.

FOT offered us two option...one a rubber type if had serious cracks, and they and Xtreme had another related to UV and anti slipping.  That what we got four years ago from xtreme and has performed as they said.

Xtreme applied paint with glass beads on mine. Was told the paint is the same they use on coach paint jobs. Great non-slip surface. They repaired all previous holes with fiberglass before painting. About 1.7 coach bucks.
No more white streaks.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are contemplating adding solar, is if you plan to use the AM Solar method where you attach the panels using 3M VHB tape along with Dicor, I believe you can only apply it to a roof without paint or coating.  Otherwise, the panels would need to be fastened with screws.  So unless you plan to use screws, you may want to just consider repairing the cracks and leaving the surface original instead of applying a roof coating.

This is why we got our PV system installed first, and still have "roof coating" on our future To-Do list.  I realize that having the solar panels already installed will probably make the roof coating job more expensive, because there is a lot more "stuff" to work around.  More time = more $.  But still, IMO, better to get your roof in it's final configuration before getting it coated.

Tim, simple job to place the brackets where needed for panels and mark that area BEFORE putting on roof with the 3M tape then sanding /or? to remove that coating (if it actually comes off at all) then install the brackets then re-coat around them with the same or similar product after a few days ( needed as you should cover brkt's with the Dicor leveling cement and it has dried/skimmed). Now you have the roof protected and solar panels on. I have gone almost 5 yrs now and those brkt's have not moved at all, even in the blistering Mexican sun, so no worries.
