Transmission Warning Light (Right Now)

On our current trip to Florida, via I-95. We are getting repeated Transmission Temp warnings "every time" we stop and start up again. It has happened 4 or five times between SC and Florida. It has only happened once while on the road. (not after stopping first)
To clarify, We stop after a few hours of driving. Get back on I-95 and barely get up to cruising speed when the red transmission warning light comes on and the bells start ringing. The first one scared the hell out of me because my fear was the computer was going to shut us down on the side of an interstate highway. I know now it won't. The first time happened in Florence SC where the exits were very close together. It was stressful anyway.

This is happening if I shut the engine off or leave it running when I stop. The stops are short. Under an hour. Once barely ten minutes at a rest stop and right back on the highway. Transmission was serviced at FOT in January. I'm not pushing hard, I-95 is almost flat. My VMSPC is currently kaput (laptop died). I only have the analog meter on the dash and it doesn't move much, stays around 200 degrees. We did get a 79 code on the Allison. The trans fluid read OK using the Allison procedure.

Parked now for a few days. Attending a funeral. (added stress) Any help will be appreciated

Ed,

Check again for the code.  They are two digits followed by two digits.  So XX.....YY.....XX.....YY

Just turn on the ignition (don't need to start the engine).

Press up and down arrows at the same time. This takes you to OL for oil level.

Press up and down arrows again at the same time.

This takes you to d-1 (for diagnostic code 1) followed by the two, two digit sequence.

If there is a d-1, press mode to go to d-2...

Ed,

On my 1995 4060R tranny, the trans light comes on nearly every time I use the retarder.  The dash temp gauge goes up above 200 by several needle widths and the light comes on.  And I have a tranny temp code on the pad.

But I glance at the VmsPC display and my tranny temp is 192.  I do not worry about the light based on having the VmsPC to keep taps on things.  I also run Allison Synthetic fluid too.

Overly sensitive or malfunctioning transmission temp sensor?  Check and clean electrical connection at the sensor?

My vote too.  We had our's get loose and wet, driving in huge rains, about 45 mph.  Got the high temp code light and buzzer.  Allison cleared the codes, after cleaning and reattaching the sense wire.  I learned, if the computer gets a high temp warning, the retarder is disabled to protect the transmission.

I don't seem to be getting the same response from the Allison as I did the other day on the road.

This morning.  Pressing the Up/Down arrows with the engine off, ignition on gave me the following.

oL - 70  oL - 70  repeatedly.     

Pressing the Up/Down arrows a second time gave me

d1- d1 repeatedly pressing mode gave me d2- d2 etc until it reached d5. I did not get any codes in the diagnostic mode.

I will check back later. We have a Wake to attend today and tomorrow. I'll check the other suggestions later. I don't want to be crawling around an engine right now.

Yes, if you got d-1 then - -, there are no stored codes.

I do not know (hopefully someone else would, or look on your wiring diagram) whether the high temp sensor for the warning you are getting is from a sensor in the Allison itself or from a Foretravel-fit part elsewhere in the ATF fluid circuit.

My dash tranny temp sensor is in an elbow below the output shaft to the passenger side.

as you probably know, when you press the up/down arrows you are simply checking the oil level. When checking the oil level the tranny oil needs to be at operating temperature, if the oil is not up to temp. you will receive the "7" code.

 Shady Lady, yes that is correct for the oil temp but as he was going to the diagnostics you bypass the oil one and at d1 etc he found no codes stored. There are other codes as well as oil temp/level.

Thanks Mike, I was going to ask that question. Is that also why I did not get the flashing count down of numbers starting at 8 and ending at 1, with the oL afterwards?

Perplexing (to me) because sometime during my pressing the up/down arrows "on our trip" I remember getting a 79 code but it was only two digits and not the 4 digit code everyone here is telling me. 

This is our second trip without my VMSPC working. I gotta call Art at Silverleaf and get this thing working on the PC tablet I purchased just for the VMSPC. (Mac laptop crapped out, new one not running "windoze" yet)

The trans warning light and buzzer as far as I know requires a temp somewhere of 250 degrees.

I tested mine on purpose and that's what mine took at the retarder.

Trans gauge did not indicate that high.  Seems the gauge is the sump on mine not the retarder itself.
