Yacht fridge.

Hello all,
Turns out the half size replacement fridge, the previous owner installed in our coach isn't going to suffice. Wanted to know about the yacht style 12 volt/115 units such as Paul had in the coach he sold last year. Are they a good option and if so where might we look to see brands and options ?  Very little luck online!

You might take a look at Sunfrost refrigerators they make a 12 cubic foot model. Talked to some folks this weekend that have one, they full time and really like it. They mostly dry camp and use solar.

You can call Trey Miller at AER Supply (281.474.3276) Seabrook, Tx.  They are marine distributors.  Ask for Trey as he said he would be glad to help you.

Bay Marine Supply, a commercial member of the forum, has excellent prices on marine fridges from both NovaKool and Vitrifrigo. We got the Vitrifrigo from them and have been quite happy with it. Way better use of space than the Dometic it replaced.

I went with the NovaKool unit for a couple of reasons:
    • The proportion of freezer to fridge was a bit higher and being single I live on lots of frozen prepared meals (no health comments needed)
    • It has the compressor and coil vent built in to the front so no need for other venting
    • It was billed as having a reversible swing door

In retrospect, the Vitri unit that Don & Tys went with may be more attractive in this price point (Sea Freeze units are about 50% more expensive).

The NovaKool has the volume, but the layout and arrangement make the use of that volume less practical.  The door has fixed shelves with one for very tall containers (~13") and two that will just fit 12 oz beer can dimensions.  The freezer, while relatively large overall has the cold plate curved into a square that chops the space into less usable volume.

While the door is technically reversible it is less than aesthetically appealing in application.  The doors are hand adjusted for right or left opening.  When reversed they need quite a bit of adjusting to look OK but are not really attractively square.

I suggest that you do a Google searches using the specific brand names to find a lot of examples and tap into the ones with really good enlarged photos to get a better sense of what you would be getting.

I also recommend paying attention to the door swing before ordering.  The NovaKool, at least, should be ordered with the door swing that you need instead of simply planning to reverse it like you would a residential unit.
