Throttle Foot control

Our throttle went dead on a hill here near Huntington WV.  We checked grounds etc and the followed old king manual and Cruise Kings current site.  The resistance on the potentiometer was almost nonexistent.  The mechanic is primarily a big rig guy and feels it needs to be replaced.  I can not read the part number on the side as it is rubbed out in several places.  What shows is 11?454.  The mystery number is either a 2,3,8,9 or 0.  The bottom numbers last two are 13 First number is probably an 8 second an 8 or a 3.

The assembly in its entirety has a sticker on the metal bracket of WM 526-359595 and underneath 226 L040

I have read the Beamalarm on the King control as well as the excellent site by cruise King.  All the springs etc are in place.

Symptoms:  Exiting Flying J started up a hill immediately and towards the crest the foot peddle stopped accelerating the engine.  Pulled over tried starting and stopping engine.  No go as engine fired went to idle but no throttle function.  Dropped towed got kids out of harms way as very narrow shoulder.  Tried fourth time throttle returned and ran another 15 miles to campground.  In campground, I tried hand throttle with no problem.  No problem earlier with cruise control.  In fact cruise control was doing better job of maintaining speed than I could do manually.  Each time tested in site no problem.  Many times I have had to use what I would describe as a double clutch before I could pick up acceleration.

Thought about the get home string  as a backup since it is itermitant, and were it 95I would, but 64 from here to VA just to many ugly possibilities.

Looking for part number and if the black box can be replaced or is it the whole enchilada.

I had the same symptoms a few years back, make sure your chassis battery ground connection is shiny clean. Previous owner had installed a knife blade type battery disconnect If I didn't keep that shiny clean with emery paper I would have Intermittent throttle failure, nothing else seem to be affected. I deep-sixed it and haven't had a problem since.

The part number on the black I have is 119454/9551, I solved my problems when I installed an air throttle in our 97 U270.

Thanks as always for the quick input.  Cleaning connections and placing the order.  Is this a straight forward replacement?  Will it need to be calibrated at a Cummins et al store.

You should be able to bolt the new one on and ride. I'm searching for the part for you now You don't need the whole pedal assembly just the sensor

Well Stump just ordered it.  Thanks for your efforts though if you find it I will put in a cancellation.  I must not be hitting the right search words.

My sensor was working and not working, so I took it off and sprayed contact cleaner into it and it has been working good ever since.
I had another problem with the box. It turned out the mechanism inside the box was hanging up and I played with it a bit and no more
problem so far

Here is a Van Hool service bulletin it explains how to test and also down on the end calibration the new one. I replaced mine in my semi but don't recall needing to calibrate, anyway its nothing you need to go to the dealer for.

Unfortunately the entire pedal.  Will put the spare on eBay if the cancellation can't be made by phone in the morning or returned.

Update on how this resolved.

1.  Should you need this assembly you must let the vendor know your year.  The same part number has different potentiometers part numbers and after 2004 it apparently is not equipped with one but has a blank in its place.  Spoke with company when they called to see if I needed anything else having noted the delivery was to a KOA.  Liberal return policy with no restocking fee and great customer service.

2.  The resistance was actually within its proper parameters when I checked it the day after the tech left.

3.  Spoke with Cruise King on the box and trouble shooting.  All connections were checked and could not get it to repeat.  It appears that when I restarted the fifth time or so on the side of the road it reset.  I am going to send the box in now that I am home for the $75 bench test.  Another great service company.

4.  Made a quick stop at Kenworth in Hunnington and they could not get it to repeat.  Asked them to check air pressure with hand gage since the rear gage was reading 145 but as some of you let me know it was a bad unit.  Relief kicked in at 125.

Finally, when we left to cross the mountains, I put together Barry's get home throttle control and the grandson and I did a walk through of what we were going to do.  Great adventure for him and me not so much.  With my limited knowledge I should be getting frustrated but it is really neat to be learning all this stuff at my age.

George,
As you know, the King Cruise (and Throttle) Control has a couple of control wire bundle connectors near the King Control unit in the engine compartment.
Our 1998 U270 had two occasions where the throttle became intermittently unavailable (zero response to foot treadle position).  The first occurrence was right at camp FT, so that one I just handed over to FT.  Through communications errors, I never did find out what they did to fix it, but another mechanic told me he thought that it was just an intermittent connection at one of those connectors.

Good tip.  It reoccurred again a long while later, I remembered the conversation, followed the King Cruise Control Manual troubleshooting guidance and sure enough, I could make the problem appear and disappear with movement of one of the connectors.  Cleaning and lubing the connector contacts with dielectric grease made the problem disappear permanently.
