SOB travel trailer.

Nephew unknowingly hooked to 220v. Fried the converter. Said unit out & on work bench. Will battery on tongue run dc ckts inside - or does battery voltage/current need to go thru converter on its way to dc fuse panel? Battery not currently installed and ohm meter on leads indicate @200 ohms.... Afraid to install battery.

All the converter does is charge battery. Removing from system just means battery will go dead from use. This does not apply if it is an inverter.

In the operation guide a sentence reads "when 120 vac is not connected to the power converter section, the RV storage battery is automatically brought into the circuit to provide the necessary 12 volts DC to operate this equipment." - which is why I wonder if the converter has to be there to get the battery to the fuse panel....

If it has 12 volt in and `12 volt out jumper them.

There is a relay inside the converter that directs the 12 volt current so if the converter is removed you would need to wire the battery power to the wires to the lights.

Without KNOWING how the converter and battery feed the fuse panel it's a crapshoot. Most that I have experienced have a wire feed coming from the converter, and another wire from the battery. If....IF yours is like this you could cap the wires that went to the converter and feed the fuse panel from the battery, and just use a standard battery charger to keep the battery charged. But, if you don't KNOW how the panel is wired, and we don't KNOW, it's a crapshoot, wanna roll the dice ?

Converter supplies 12-volt circuits when 120-volts are available.  And usually acts like a battery charger.  Converter not needed as long as battery is charged.  Battery can be charged from auto or vehicle towing trailer, so converter is never needed.
Buy nephew a volt meter (as little as $10 from Walmart or Harbor Freight).  Never plug anthing in without being sure of voltage.
Not enough info from your email to know if all trailer circuits are wired first to converter, so if converter is removed circuits will be dead.  Don't be afraid to connect battery and see what works.

If ckts are wired thru converter, should they work just from battery with the dc chassis removed from the converter?
'course this should be mute IF the new unit shows up(undamaged by shipper - as I read that Amazon does not repackage before shipping and a lot of them are showing up damaged....).

Just hooked battery up and nothing welded together!
Things inside trailer worked. Gonna have to wait 'till  Tuesday to see if air conditioner will go. Does the wall thermostat need dc to function? I remember the one in my house had a 24v transformer that I think they rectified for that....? or maybe they left it AC -'been too long ago.

My T'stat needs 12v, yours may, or may not. But no matter, if the lights are on you've got 12v in the rig. Congrats !

Thanks Toyman, I'm guessing ours is same. My next worry is hopeing(sp?) I can figure out how to wire umbilicle(sp again?) to new unit. Will get  pic of current hookup....
