1998 U 270 rear ABS sensor source and part number

I have checked Barry's site, and have contacted FT. In fact FT would be interested in finding a source for the rear ABS. I thought I had located one from Freightliner parts site; that I had mailed to Bern'd. Big mistake as if it is the right one he has it. After spending $22000 one would think he would at least contact me to tell me he had a part. Maybe he needed it for another customer. As long as it was a forum member, that is okay. But I would like to find a source before I need another one. Since it is only a magnet; I took the front one I got from FT. Removed wiring harness and soldiered it onto the old one.

One list I have shows the Meritor p/n is A2237G1073

Meritor says

February 2014 A2237G1073 Kit Sensor Abs Service succeeded by R955342 (right angle, 6.6 ft/2 meter)

http://meritorpartsonline.com.au/Documents/PartsBulletins/Supersessions/supersessions_comprehensivelist2015.pdf

Here's what appears to be the current list of ABS sensor assembly p/n's with assorted info http://www.meritorwabco.com/MeritorWABCO_document/tp06109.pdf

R955342 by MERITOR - ABS SENSOR KIT

Front sensor appears to be AL1027194 straight, 18".  I am still searching for the right cross-reference.  These appear to require a bushing as well.

Tag is R955335, right angle 1 ft.

John,

Let me ask-- why are you in need of replacing the ABS sensor? Do you have a broken wire? Won't register and triggering the ABS light?

In many cases, they are just out of adjustment or dirty and can be pulled, cleaned, lubed and reinserted with the proper (zero) gap.  Been there, done that.

Brett it was a broken wire, And the wire has to be a straight off sensor as there is no room for a sensor that the wire comes off at 90 degrees.

Check with Jim McNeece to see if he has a p/n.  I recall he had to replace one of the drive axle sensors within the past few years  2003 U320: Rear ABS Wheel Sensor Replacement

The cross reference document must be wrong - I will keep looking.

In my pictures the longer of the ABS is the front sensor from FT and the shorter one is the actual one from my 1998 U270. FT was wanting to know where they could get the rear one also.

If Jim M. doesn't have a current p/n for the drive (hopefully he does), you might want to get in touch with Meritor and describe the situation.  Perhaps there's a different "succession" part but I couldn't find anything that looked like your shorter sensor in Meritor's online catalog.  The shortest was 65 mm or so which is more like the front sensor you have.

I'm surprised the documents both John H. and I have show a p/n that resolves to a 90 degree sensor yet you have a straight (TBH, I have no idea what is actually on the drive axle on our coach, we've only had to replace a tag sensor, but I would have expected your '98 to have the same sensors as our 2003).

It's been a while, but I think somebody sourced it from freightliner before. As for certain mechanics/shops.  I just know some of them are competent, but they are also sneaky and don't tell the full story sometimes regarding parts and other stuff. I've been told the airbags I got from trucksprings are not as thick and good as the bags from FT....."we've cut them open and the rubber is different". Uh huh...

That's where we got our tag sensor.  The problem (I think) is that the original p/n we all have for the drive axle has a "succeeded" part number that is for a 90 degree yet John has a straight mount sensor that's shorter than anything currently shown as a Meritor sensor.

We're trying to find a sensor that matches what John has on his coach.

SPECULATION ONLY: I suspect that as long as the sensor will go all the way into the "ring"/zero gap and the wire is not a problem in terms of interference, they MAY be interchangeable.  If someone confirms this would appreciate an update.

Brett there is no room for the 90 degree ABS sensor on our coach. I wonder how many years used the straight on the rear. Maybe FT recognized the problem and changed to a set up the allows 90 degrees sensors. I found a 2003 picture. I should have took my rear sensor but did not.

I am with Brett. If the of of both sensors is the same and you can fit it into the bracket I believe the longer sensor will work just fine. The spring clip in the bracket holds the sensor in place without it being bottomed out.

Toby the clearance will not allow the 90 degree or the one for front which is longer. FT parts have the front but are unable to find a source for the short straight sensor for the rear. I was asked to pass on the source to them when I ever find a source. I talked to a semi parts dealer in Houston while I was at Bern'd. He said he had the right one and sent to Bern'd. However, I left Bern'd before it arrived.

John,

Looking at your photo, with the wire outboard of the plate and running through the hole, I agree, a 90 degree would not work.

But, is it necessary for it to be installed that way-- again just asking.  I have no first hand info on this.

Said another way, would a 90 degree installed from "inboard" and wire not run through the hole work.  If same diameter and same "sensor properties" would be worth exploring with Wabco (Meritor).

So this may seem extreme to some, having had that sensor mount break off of a housing and having installed a meritor abs on a non equipped trailer you can move the sensor mount to either align the hole or misaglign the hole for a 90 degree sensor.  Its really not as drastic as it sounds you just need a competent welder and make sure you line it up with the tone ring.

John, that's the same manual I was referencing and is what's causing the confusion.  The p/n for the rear sensor in that manual shows as having been succeeded by a new p/n which is for a 90 degree sensor.

This is a silly question, but, why cannot FT source a product that they installed on many coach's and must have better avenues than us to look for a part that THEY need for clients?? Baffles me, unless I miss something here!

edit-- surely someone has the old style for sale if the new type cannot be used?

My guess is FT just buys the axle/drivetrain system. Meritor likely spec'd it with the ABS system.

John/Pat,

Is the p/n in the document John H and I have the correct original one for your coach per FT?  Is yours a Wabco/Meritor system?  If so, hopefully Meritor has an answer to what the correct replacement would be since these were used on coaches going back to build 4594 per that document.

(ETA - I'm surprised Meritor would list the R955342 as the replacement for the original sensor if it didn't fit in the same applications.  Has anyone contact their technical support folks yet to ask?)
