Still a relative newby

Took the coach out today for it's exercise and  my practice/learning to drive. I'm in hilly country(Jackson county, TN. Have several mile long hills. One, going down to Gladdice,TN, I pulled the shift lever down one notch and let it roll. /the RPM got to 2500 so I used the service brake to bring it down a bit. Is There a rpm that I should not go  over? This coach spends a lot of time around here around 2000rpm due to all the hills....All the gauges seemed to stay where they should be.

Rule of thumb is 1800 to 2100 rpm depending on the pre-programmed shift points of tranny.

Call Cummins with your engine serial number.  The "important" numbers are:

Peak Torque RPM (don't run the engine hard below this figure).

Peak HP RPM (no point in running engine under load faster, as you are spending fuel with lower HP output).

Maximum permissible speed on "over-run"/no load/engine braking condition.  It WILL be higher than peak HP.

On our 1997 8.3 the governed speed is 2400 and the idle speed is 750. You can call Cummins and get the correct information for your particular engine including advertised horsepower, peak torque and so on. Just give them the engine serial number. The Cummins number I have is: (800) 343-7357.
