Bladder problem ..strange to say the least

SO I picked up my coach after having both slides repaired ie bladders and manifolds. Weird issue

when I extend the bedroom slide it seals fine and closes off from the bladder

when I retract it into the coach it has a 3/8" gap across the top(open air). What would cause it to seal in the open position but not in the closed position?

I have a couple ideas but want to see what you guys say ( that have experience in this are)

Does it seal properly if only slid in half-way?

Slide is not properly aligned when in the retracted position?

I will check the partially in method and go from there.. misalignment is my thought right now

There might be an interlock not sensing correctly when the slide is in so that the valve(s) to re-inflate the bladder never open. The 2002 is a bit different from the 2001 system so I am making an assumption.

The "train" system on the '02's are an odd duck in operation.
They de-flate, then "tip out then slide out and tip back up level before the bladder re-inflates.
and on retraction they tip down, retract and then "tip" back level and then the lock pins lock then lastly the bladder inflates.
It sounds like that the slide is not "tipping" back square with the coach ..ie: not in allignment for the pins to re-set..

Hi David -

We met you at Buckhorn last year and have been following your journey.

The Train system is used on the large slide only. The Train is not used on the Bed Room slide.

I think a question that I did not hear an answer to is: Does the rear bladder inflate when the slide is open and closed? To check this you can inflate the bladder when the slide is closed and try to slide a credit card between the bladder and slide. If you can slide the credit card between without effort, your bladder did not inflate.

If the bladder is not inflating there is a magnetic switch located on the top interior edge of the slide that might not be sending the "closed" signal to the brain. The HWH system will not allow the bladder to inflate if it does not know that the slide is in.

If I recall, when the bladder is not inflated a space of 3/8'+/- would be visible around the slide.

I am probably wrong in saying this but I don't believe HWH recommends opening the slide part way and then inflating the bladder on either slide.

When the slide is retracted and the bladder is inflated and there is still a 3/8" gap at the top of the slide I would suggest you find an authorized HWH service center. pdfs below list service centers -

Ok had time to look it over again..

When extending the slide out.. it seals fine.

Retract and it does not seal at the top

Partial slide out (mid way) starts to fill and stops and I can see light on approx 1/2 way across the top

Looked at the manifold and I found this plug not plugged in adn thought I had found the problem but the living room slide doesnt have that same plug plugged in and works fine.

any ideas.. going to check with a gauge next

See if you can find those wires on your elect schematics to see what they go to.

for now I have turned the pressure up..Will be leaving town in the morning for a week.. after that we will head back to the place that did the repair and see about getting a real fix on it.. thanks everyone for the help

Bladder pressure should be about 15 psi on my 2001.

Says set at the factory at 12psi.. Moved it up and its almost sealed.. didnt want to go much further as i wanst sure how much a complete rotation on the dial represents.

Do you have a pressure gauge to measure the pressure
increase? I put a gauge in-line on the bedroom slide last year and increased the pressure to 15lbs. I have a new (2 year old) bladder that the HWH tech said could take 16lbs. Do you have a new bladder?

Don't blow it!

Also, the bedroom bladder is easy to put a gauge in the soft rubber tube coming from the bladder itself using a tee with 2-barb fittings/clamps and FNPT to screw the gauge into.

Yes new bladder.. how many turns did it take to increase just a couple pounds

Honestly don't know as there was two of us, and I was reading the gauge while he turned the valve down below.

I also made a 4"X 6" inspection opening in the bedroom slide trim at the bottom. It allows me to look at the pressure gauge, and to be able to reach in and pull back the carpet and look or feel for water intrusion. I covered the hole with a piece of matching Formica and two small bronze screws. It looks OEM to the casual observer, and keeps me from having to remove trim to see what condition my bladder is in.

Can you post a pic of you gauge install? I am big on the OEM look also. I do not like drilling holes and tearing things up to improve something.

Here is a picture of the covered opening. It looks better in real life as the wood grain seems to match better looking at it with the naked eye. Another option would be to go through the closet floor.

I also modified the trim so that I can just remove the bottom piece if necessary, instead of having to remove the two sides as well.
