Cleaning Fuel Strainer

Over the past few years I have changed the fuel filters on my '99 U320 but I have not cleaned the metal fuel strainer that is in the clear plastic cylinder.  I have been reluctant to try to open the plastic can for fear of breaking it.  I can not see an obvious way to unscrew the top or bottom or both.

Can someone describe the proper way to open and clean the screen.

Thanks,

Richard

The p\only way I know is to replace the filter. There are several places to buy that filter
