Hyd radiator fan motors..

Well back @ Cummins in Coburg, OR. they have the motors in so will camp out here for two or three days... not much fun when the coach is still winterized....
Long walk to the truckstop.... could really use one of those electric bikes right about now.

I'm sure I don't need to say it, but hang on to the old motors unless required for core!  And depending on core charge, I would like to buy them if you're inclined to sell.

I would certainly like additional information on those motors. If the motor is the same as is used on our 1995 U320 it would definitely be nice to have a spare on hand . . . .

I will just have to wait and see what the story is.. replacing both motors with new... wanted warranties is why didn't go with  rebuilt ones...If there are kits available... was told that they are not rebuildable (as per FT parts) but have heard otherwise on this forum..

Wouldn't it be benificial to swap those one of a kind, nowhere to be found, non rebuildable, foretravel imported only for us motors to motors that every other swinging coach maker uses? That are readily avaliable and that you don't hear of failures with like the ones on the foretravel coaches. It just seems a lot of you have issues with these. Makes me glad my old rear fan setup is what's on my old buggy.

The really aren't that fancy or hard to find or un-obtainable. It's just that parts people, etc are too lazy to use their brain.

Have rebuilt similar motors, if the shaft and internal parts are good you can match up seals easily.

Two years ago we went through something similar. One of the hydraulic fan motors locked up, engine started to get hot, I pulled over and shut down. Two tows took us to Cabin Diesel in Big Cabin, OK. They were able to fix everything but the hydraulic pump. Foretravel took a standard pump and replaced the gear with one with a longer shaft. Nothing else will work, supposedly. Foretravel thought they had a replacement in stock, but what they had was the standard pump, not the longer shaft. Fortunately, we have a friend who is a mechanic and has a machine shop. We brought both the new pump (with the standard shaft) and the old pump (with the longer shaft) to him. He opened up the old pump and found that there was nothing wrong with it. He put in a seal kit. We sent the new pump back and reinstalled the original one. Two years later it is still going strong. I'm not sure why Foretravel couldn't have used the standard pump rather than modify one to their specs.

Needing a seal would not have locked the motor up. Something must have been lodged in the motor to cause it to freeze up. It must have dislodged when disassembled if seals fixed the problem.

Never had one of ours apart but some brands have different colored plastic shims/gaskets ,its a hit and miss to assemble.

I have resealed 4, 2 on my Monaco and 2 on the Foretravel. They were both Danfloss units out of Italy. They are simple to work on. I have posts on the Foretravel motors I did, and Barry Beam has posted his rebuild. Parts are the issue, the rebuild seal kit part  number is in my post.

the shaft lengths are the issue, just got her home so will look at the old motors later.
Now calling Summit Racing to get another air pressure sending unit (Stewert-Warner for the VDO dash gauge)... yes I know sounds weird but that is the way FT did it on this coach.

The shafts may be different lengths, but the seal kit is the same on mine as Barry's 2003

It's a good idea, sometime when you are crawling around under your coach, to clean off the data plates on your fan drive hydraulic pump and your fan motors.  Then take some photos of them for future reference.  You will be glad to have the photos if you ever need to go hunting for new motors or parts to rebuild the old ones.

The pump on our '93 was made by Vickers, and the motors were built by John S. Barnes.

Great idea Chuck.  I will be doing this next time I am under the coach.
