Steering Box Core

I remember a recent post regarding a Shepard steering box core for sale.

I cannot find the post, but I'm interested in buying it if it's still available.

It was marked as sold a couple of days ago so the ad was removed.

Wednesday 10 May my M100 steering gear will be swapped out for a RedHead rebuild at Josam's in Orlando. They have done 3 in the last few months so they are getting really good at it...
150K miles on the old one - steered fine, started leaking so I just said let's put in a blueprinted box. We leave pm 5/12 for a two week trip to TN, AR, and TX - so if someone is in the flight path I can deliver. Core charge only if its reasonably near where I'm pointing.
I can also ship the box (80#) using my company's UPS discount - to you or direct to RedHead (UPS ground for me from Central FL to Auburn WA was $44.00, for example). I've yet to find anyone who can do better than my discount! So that would be core charge plus shipping. I send a screen shot of the discount - so no hidden 'handling charges'.

If someone is interested let me know - I'm hauling a lot of stuff to deliver to family from Starr, so I will only take the box if asked.

Related to this issue is the cummins dealer shop foreman mentioning that Foretravels selection of a too low of a temp setting on the hydraulic fan controller costs at least 37hp if not more and causes the system oil to run hot.

That can have caused the fan motors and steering box leaks alot have seen.

The rest of the industry ran a fully on at 199 degrees.  Foretravel used a fully on at 180 degrees.

Full high speed warmed up.  Flite10 and I both have noticed no temp difference with the new controller.

Only more power and mpg

Dave, Barry at Josam is great to deal with. They replaced my steering box 3 years ago, also all the heavy suspension work on the fleet I ran for 35 years.

Flash, can you tell us just how the oil in the system is cooled.

Volume in the reservoir?  Air flow over it opposite the cooling fans side?

Now that you mention it the removal of the ton of metal stock muffler should reduce the heat flow towards the rear of the compartment on that same side.

Good question.

Fan locked on high and hot from the muffler.

Think it is great how the cores are going from one member to another.

That is what the Forum family is all about.

Thanks Folks,

Carter-

This got started by Gary Omel, and it has worked very well for those that can and want to be proactive about the replacement.

I have that core (now RedHead rebuilt) sitting in my shop waiting for installation, which should happen when I finish rebuilding the deck on our house.  If I can get it changed out before we head west I'll bring my old core to you.

2019 Update.... in January, Forum member Dave Damer transferred the steering box core, while in Quartzsite. This core travels from member to member, as needed. Current Forum members: "Bsu fans" have it in Idaho. Contact Ron and Hazel to get your name on the list, if steering box surgery is on your horizon. They will clue you in on the transfer process for the core.
