Power Steering Filter?

Power Steering Filter?

Does the 03 ISM have a separate power steering filter? I see references to PS filters but nothing by year.

Mine is in the bottom of the resivouir tank

Mark, you should have 3 filters stacked in the oil reservoir for the hydraulic fluid and should not have a separate reservoir for the power steering.

That's the way mine is, just 3 filters in the canister.

Round hydraulic tank at left (driver side) of rear hatch serves for the power steering as well.

Thanks all. I ordered the 3 hydraulic filters and plan on R&R them this weekend.

Remember not to unscrew the filler cap just loosen it. It is a rubber expansion plug like the old thermos's, if you totally unscrew it the dipstick falls in the tank. The boogered threads are supposed to stop this but I have seen posts where they fell into the tank.

You may also find that you need to replace the seal between the lid and the tank. I had a tough time getting it to reseal properly.

And, do it properly:

5' of cheap hose.

Remove lid

Start siphon and drain the OUTSIDE of the filters all the way (if you don't do this first, and just remove the filters, you will mix oil from the "clean side" with that on the "dirty/unfiltered" side.

Remove the wing nut, washer and filters

Install filters and washer and wing nut

Fill with new fluid of the proper type (should be labeled on the reservoir)

Will do. Have a drill-powered pump and will fill with fresh oil.

Siphon? Why not use the drain plug at the bottom of the reservoir? I believe that drains from outside of the filter elements. Do they not all have that drain?

Yes, removing the drain plug is an option. But if it leaks you now have 3 gallons of new fluid to contend with. Using a siphon eliminates that possibility.

Certainly your choice of methods.

The new/replacement number of the 84101B is Fleetguard 87610A . The 84101B is still a good number and some still available. The gasket is still the same number.

Put you hand into a tall garbage bag so you can reach down into the oil to remove the filters without getting dirty.

Be careful of the wing nut. It will be slippery and you don't want to drop it.
