$1600 1992 DD Oregon

Going once, twice, it's yours!

If anybody wants to pounce... I have been trying to work out financing for this coach. Bank uses Nada and won't budge.

So.. here it is. I have talked to the sellers for weeks. They can't get the air compressor to work. The coach is a one owner- picked up at estate auction.. Bob and Marge Williams. They loved and maintained the 6v92 Detroit Diesel and the buy comes with extra parts! Filters, belts, glass cargo light spares.

They want 15k from me with 2.5k when I sell the house. They have something they want to flip.. they need 15k now! I'm sure if I offered 16k now they would pounce. Air bags are set to travel for driving..  they just can't demonstrate the auto level feature.

Correct... but from base value to high end it only changes by a grand... and it does not account for maintenance at all... crap system.

Bob and Marge loved the coach so much, the outside handle says Williams, not Foretravel. Apparently that was an option for buyers that never planned to sell.

Flippers, beware, what else can I say. Cash will be king. BTDT on a coach that belonged to their father supposedly. This late in the season, they may be working you, be wary of overextending yourself without an adequate slush fund to even get the coach home. Prices will start to drop in a couple of months.

I met these guys. It's legit. They couldn't raise the coach higher than travel.. but I still took a look at the underside.

I'm still trying to seal the deal, but apparently only a moderator can delete the first post..

My big question is "why did the roof have to be replaced, and what kind did they do-rubber or fibre glass. What damage inside because of leaking roof as pictures are bad. How did engine run etc.

I've learned a bunch on this great forum. Based on that before I bought this coach I'd get a thorough pre-purchase inspection by an experienced inspector to get an idea of how many coach buck you'll need to get this coach on the road. That amount may exceed your purchase price, hence the inspection. Hope it all works out for you.

Jeff,

The forum is great! Yes, the pre-purchase inspection should be done and by someone who has been around the block. Not only will it tell how many $$$ you need right away but will give you a fair indication what's ahead. So many of us (including myself) have an eye for the bulkhead but have not been that aware of what a tiny water leak in the wet bay can do even in a coach from Arizona that has never seen a salted road.

Jeff & Sandy and Pierce,

I agree.. when circumstances permit.

This time, knowing nothing about rv's. I eliminated 99% by desiding on Foretravel. It's here. It's affordable. I can't find much wrong with it. I'm going with my gut that a Foretravel is the way to go, and doubling down on my read of the sellers and what little I have learned in 2 months.

It gives me a place to move to... sans house. It provides freedom from debt. And she purrs like a kitten with spare parts and receipts.

Barely being able to afford a $16k rv..... 25 years old... 16k is a bad day at the repair shop. You really, really need to get an expert to go over this thing with a fine tooth comb to make sure you arent in for any big surprises, if you're cutting it this close. Would REALLY suck to drop all your coin and find out you cant use it without dropping an equal amount or even more on repairs.

Work around heavy equipment. The mechanic at work was an rv mechanic for 12 years before the last 27 years..

Calculated bet.

Good on ya!  Better to buy when you are younger, you can work on it, learn a lot, and if it all goes south, work another 5 years and buy another one.  I started with a VW camper van in the 70''s and have been moving up ever since. Lost money on almost every one, but had fun and learned a lot.

Paully,
If you have made your decision, regardless of how you arrived at it, I want to welcome you to the fraternity of Foretravel owners! May you never have cause to regret your decision. When we bought ours, we didn't have the margin of cash reserves to allow for the 10 or 20 coach bucks one "should" have set aside for first year repairs and upgrades of a new to you coach. It was the only Foretravel anywhere close to our budget within 500 miles... It turned out to have serious bulkhead issues. It took me the better part of two years to rebuild the basement structure in the utility bay area as well as do a few upgrades. Things happen for a reason though, and by the time I finished my bulkhead basement repairs, the housing market in San Diego had recovered significantly. The original plan would have had me sell my house shortly after getting the Foretravel and going full time. While it was a struggle to pay the mortgage and put the money in the repairs, when I was done and sold the house, I was almost $80K better off than I would have been had I sold the house as originally planned. In other words, that two years wait net us almost double the 40K that the coach cost us. Even under the worst of the strain of that two year period, I didn't regret buying the coach. It was overwhelming at times, but I kept the dream alive by visualizing the end result.
Good luck!
Don

Paully,

It was hard for me to keep quiet about this one. Glad you got it. It even looks like it has the air cleaner intake up close to the right rear taillight. Congrats on getting this one. Ours has been almost zero mandatory stuff in eight years. It will be an excellent home to you.

Congrats, Paully.
We bought our 1989 GV from our ONLY RV dealer in the area. We had never even heard of Foretravel. Looked at the coach. Saw all the loving care that had been done. Saw the quality of the construction. Knew our dealer's reputation (King's Campers of Wausau, WI) and the warranty /discounts they honored. Knew what we could afford. Knew how and what we planned to use the coach for.
So the coach fit our requirements, and we have been quite satisfied with our Foretravel.
Being somewhat handy--up to a point, then I am dangerous--we have done a lot of things to make the coach ours.
These "things" take time, can cost quite a few $$ but ultimately very satisfying when people walk by in an RV park and comment on how beautiful and well-cared for our coach is.
Look on your coach as your new hobby. The money you put into it you will never recoup, but the pride and satisfaction you get from having one of the greatest coaches in the world will more than compensate you for your efforts.

The reference to these being a calculated bet is correct.

Winning is a different idea to everyone.

Some need/want to find the totally rebuilt, perfect, cheap Foretravel.

While it certainly happens odds are odds.

We bought the model and floorplan.  Happened to be the only one we looked at.  Our fate.

Driven it 32k miles in 64 months with about $25 CB's put into it.

The next 50k miles should add very few CB's.

Condition=price.

I prefer to arrange to rebuild things myself.  Then I start out with known good condition systems.

But if were on a extremely limited budget there are excellent coaches around.

Probably one of the only ways to get a luxury coach cheaply is an older Foretravel product
