Check engine light.

Check engine went off.  Pulled over and checked VMS.  There were no diagnostic messages captured.  Since I was 40 miles from anywhere I drove on to Abilene.  When I stopped, I shut down engine.  On restart there was no check engine light. Any ideas what would trigger a check engine light, but not capture an error code?

The error code could have been there, just not as one of the PIDs that VMSpc was monitoring.

If the engine is running and the CEL is illuminated, you can use the under-dash switches to capture blink codes as well.

Steve,
On VMSpc when you click on Diagnostics on the menu be sure to click on View History to see what is there as well. They may not stay in the Recent Events list very long.
