GV Mystery Shelf

Okay for those of you with older Grand Villas; do you have this shelf in your kitchen?
It's a mystery to me. I wonder if it's a PO add on or original that's been modified. It is to left of of the stove above the triangle section of counter. It has a piano hinge along the underside, but is glued along the top, so is fixed in position. The corner of the shelf extends a bit beyond the edge of the counter and the fridge door bumps it when fully opened.
If anyone can shed light on the original configuration -- or whether it is indeed an afterthought, I'd like to know. Extra counter space is always welcome in the kitchen.... But not sure if this won't just be in the way.

  or use those brackets.

I had an old GV, along with 2 friends that had them and none had a shelf like that.

Foretravels came with a ample safe for the transport of coach bucks. Talk about foresight. And no mine doesn't have the shelf.

Thanks everybody. Stump, I'll bet you're right. A small toaster oven would fit perfectly and there is an outlet right above.
