Gates 38504 installation

As I work through mechanical items on the 1992 U280 I was changing serpentine belts and tensioners on alternator and hydraulic pump.  I used the Gates 38504 from Rock Auto Parts ($77.79 + shipping) on both belts.  One thing I did note with the change from Dayco to Gates was Gates takes 1/2" drive tools instead of 3/8".  No problem on the engine belt but on this frame it was difficult to operate the hydraulic pump tensioner due to space.  I had a 1/2" drive ratchet which was as small as a standard 3/8"ratchet and got 'er done.  This tool would not have been in the coach if I was on the road.  I am mentioning this because a road side change with a standard 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar might be challenging.  Not impossible, but challenging.  I think I will cut the male end off an old 1/2" extension and weld it to a piece of flat stock of appropriate length and keep it in coach to change this one belt.  If someone has a better idea, I'm listening.

YMMV

I had the same experience with the tight working quarters around the lower belt tensioner.  I used a Craftsman 1/2" flexible head-angle breaker bar to "un-tension" the tensioner so I could install the belt.  Your custom tool sounds like a great idea!

Google serpentine belt tools. All kinds of slim tools come up.

Mine uses a 3/8" socket drive. With a 3/8" ratchet drive, it is hard to move it far enough (or maybe that just me). With a 3/8" breaker bar, it is much easier. With my 1/2" breaker bar and a 3/8" adapter, even DW can do it.

Stump, don't show this your DW; she might think I am dissing my DW, and be looking for me next time.  :help:
