Auxillary oil pump on 6V92 ?

Question .. I have an electric oil pump plumbed to my 6V92 engine. When I turn the ignition key on prior to start up the pump comes on and runs for about 30 seconds and shuts off. Then I turn the key to start, engine fires, and we are on our way. Conversely when I shut down the engine, pump comes on for about 2 minutes and shuts down. Think it is a great feature for startup and cooldown but wondering, was this a standard feature? Have all the manuals but I can find no mention of a pump. PO kept meticulous records so if he added it on later thought there would be some kind of record. what I really need to know is if the pump fails how serious is it?

Thanks in advance, Steve

Sounds like a prelube/postlube pump, theoredically alot of bearing wear occurs during startup. The postlube would be to cool the turbo, most big industrial engines have these pumps.Would not worry if pump fails but since you have it would keep it in running condition.Amsoil used to sell a kit but stopped a few years ago.Next time you start engine keep an eye on the oil pressure
gauge it should show some pressure during the prelube.

Not standard on any vehicles that I know about, but a good feature. As previously mentioned, oiling bearings before loading them is good and the DD 6v92 has a turbo and supercharger, so cooling them down and keeping them oiled while they spool down is good. Take care of it and it will take care of your engine.

Excellent system. Many marine diesels have prelube pumps wired to start systems. They are either air or electric powered. Hitting the start button starts the prelube pump. When an oil pressure switch in the oil gallery on the engine reads a certain pressure, pump stops and start motor is actuated. This insures that all bearings are lubricated before any load is put on them,

I don't believe it was standard or even an option with Foretravel.  It's a nice to have, especially for the turbo.
The only issue I can think of in terms of a bad failure is actually when the engine is running and the output line from the pump breaks and oil back flows back out of the engine.  It would all depend on how it was plumbed and I would hope a check valve was installed right on the engine block so you were never trusting a flexible hose of any kind.  If the pump just stops pumping you will be operating  just like the rest of us.

I'm curious to see how they did it and I'm others are too.  If you can, please post photos.  Nice to hear your coach was cared for so well.

I have seen that as a dealer option on heavy equipment, the Cat dealer had an option where they hard lined most all of the grease zerks to 1 or 2 central plates for ease of access and a better chance of getting grease.

Wow! I'm jealous! Your PO was a much cooler guy than mine.  >:D Pics would be awesome.

Shouldn't be a problem if it fails. Like JohnFitz says you'll just be like the rest of us.

Thanks for posting.

Don't mean to be to picky but in your sig you show

6V92 Detroit Diesel w/ 4 spd Allison w/ retarder.

I'm pretty sure you have a Jake Brake not a retarder even though it probably says Retarder on your dash switch. Unless of course your PO was Mr MoneyBags and had them fit an Allison retarder in there! I think there was technical issue with that combo.

Ken,

Just standing on the curb here, watching this thread go by.  Your comment aroused my interest slightly...enough to send me off to Beamalarm to check the specs.

The 1990 U300 is not listed, but the 1991 U300 is.  It shows the same engine (6V92) and the same 4-speed transmission (Allison MTB 648) as Steve's coach.  BUT, it also lists a "transmission retarder brake" as standard equipment.

Then, if I look at the 1992 U300 specs (standard and Silver Anniversary), it lists a "Jake Brake" as standard.

SO, perhaps the 1990 U300 did actually come with a retarder?

1989 u300 has a retarder standard.  277hp/840 torque.

I had the Detroit guys rerate the later models to 300/820 which was slower.

Guys buddies said "I got 300 hp"  so I changed them

Even a cat 3208 could have been possibly ordered with an MT643R or an MT647R transmission with a transmission retarder in the 80's and

Or even be modified to accept one for many CB's. The R transmission exists but they appear extremley rare, and I understand even the 7xx transmission used on the 6v92 was available with retarder. Somebody must have been asking for them when they ordered a coach, or otherwise they probably wouldn't be there. Just the matter a lot of Coach bucks

Gentlemen :  Simply cannot thank you all for the help. First, photos coming. Can't get to the barn to at least this weekend but coming as soon as I can. Really thought that this was standard equipment.

John -- You are my hero of the day ( puts you in running for hero of the week ). Thoughts on rubber oil lines and check valves was super. Believe if memory serves me correctly they are. Never thought about check valve but rest assured that project has been moved to the very top of the list. This is a catastrophic failure that can be avoided cheap.

Ken -- It's a retarder. Even dash has factory temp gauge for the torque convertor. I do not have a joystick, is applied when step on the brakes. Still learning exactly how it works best. Pulled Donner Summit a couple times and the Grapevine once and it worked great. Which leads me to.....

Chuck / Old -- I too, am very curious about the pedigree of this rig. From everything I have figured out it seems to be a hybrid of a 1990 and 91. Fred may be on to something. PO said original owner had something to do with an RV magazine and ordered it to his specifications. I still have the original order and related paperwork. Still have the original license plate as well. Oklahoma, last registered in 94 there. Bureaucrats in CA. made me give up PO owners plates.  Will dig it out and let you know what I find. Next I plan too take a lot of pictures, both inside and out, get engine / transmission numbers etc., any kind of name plates, that kind of thing and post them up. Hopefully the assembled multitude can shed some light on exactly what I've got in he barn.

I have, and am, learning a lot from this site. Again, thanks to all, Steve

Remember from the Beamalarm site,a bottom line coach can be ordered with most options of a top of the line model. On the
pre lube systems search for "prelubers".

A cooling off period after hard use will help prevent coking up of the turbo's bearing.  Had  several truck fleet owners install a mechanical egg timer type electric cutoff switch in the dash and set it to cut the still on ignition powers at 5-15 minutes while they went into a restaurant
