Aqua Hot Fuel Filter Location

Getting ready to change out fuel filter and nozzle on a 2003 U320.  Not sure of location of fuel filter.  Please advise.

First compartment on the driver's side, by the genset.  You'd think it was the genset filter, but no, it's the AquaHot one...

Genset one is the same filter number, IIRC, but it hangs down roughly mid-coach-width underneath by the rear of the genset.

I needed a 16 mm and a 19 mm wrench for the fuel nozzle.  Put a plastic bag over the filter as you loosen it up.  Any fuel dribble will get caught in the bag.

Hey Roger,  you had no problem working on the AH in that tight spot?? I think there is one bolt/nut that is a bear to get at, if memory serves me well. I watched a You Tube video about  " how to " and thought I'd give it a shot last year, but we had bigger issues, so I hired a mobil service in Tucson to do it , and just watched. He was about 6'4" and weighed close to 300# +/-, but got in and out about a dozen times. How was it setting the nozzle, etc?? BTW, I highly recommend the service, if anyone is interested. Cameron's Reliable Maintenance Services. Very competent, and fair.

It is a tight spot.  Pull your tray out to the curb side.  Put a rug or something on the ground on the dr side with the bay door open. Crawl in.  I am 6'-2" and I can sort of roll over and sit up.  Lots of stuff will try to snag your head.

There is a big carpet covered panel that has to come out to get to the AH.  Two, maybe three screws to get the stainless steel cover loose. It is pretty big and it takes some wrestling but it will come out over the tracks.  Hand it out to someone outside.

The hardest part is getting the burner off.  Two J bolts one at 10 and one at 4 as I recall.  I think it is a 10mm nut that you have to loosen up enough so that the bolts pivots away from the slotted tab on the burner case.  The one on the back side is the hard one.  I used a 10" long flexible drive extender.  Socket fits on one end.  The other connects to my smaller electric screw driver.  It is all by feel to get the socket on the nut.  It is not easy the first few times but keep at it.  Loosen the nut just enough to pivot the polt away from the burner case.  When you get it do the other side, much easier.

Wiggle the burner and it will come out.  Set it down carefully so as to not disrupt the wires.  There is a spark gap setting tool attached to the motor case, take it off you will need it to,set the spark,gap.  Remove and replace the nozzle.  Set the spark points using the gap tool.

Follw the instructions to pull out the burner chamber. Clean it outside with a wire brush.  Some brake cleaner helps.  Wipe it dry and reinstall.  Put the burmer back in, place and tighten the nuts.  Don't over tighten.

Before you put the cover pack on turn on the AH burner, it will whirr up and down a bit until fuel pressure is maintained and air is purged, then it will start.  Let it run through a whole cycle.

If you run into problems that you can't get by then try to get Rudy an the phone, he has done hundreds of these if not thousands and can talk you through any thing.

I have done mine a couple times.  The guys that are good at it, Rudy and John Carillo, get in and out maybe twice.  They have everything they need with them on the way in, get out to clean the burner chamber back in and finish it.  I am not that good at it.  When I am done I know I have done something that stressed things not normally stresses.  Time for some advil.

Also after taking the burner chamber out use a wire brush to clean the heat exchanger and vacuum out the debris. I use a brass wire brush attached to piece of pvc to clean mine you will be surprised at how much carbon comes out.

I found if you have a floor jack to take the stops off the Joey bed nd move it out another 2 feet makes getting that back bolt much easier.

A solid socket extension is easier to use than a flexible one.
