Road Checklist Items

My GV is coming out of the shop in the next week or so, with the bulkhead work now beautifully done by Truline RV in Spokane.

They also replaced most of the fresh, grey and black water plumbing and some topside house plumbing that needed to be done. The coach is then headed to Les Schwab for new Toyo M177 tires and then to a truck shop that is a Detroit Diesel shop for new engine belts and a checkup.

The one remaining worry I have is regarding the engine cooling fan issue I've read about here. I would appreciate any additional advice on how to definitively confirm that my fan needs replacing, as this is a job I probably can't do, due to the clearances not allowing removal of the fan by an amateur mechanic.

Thanks to all.

I realized that I asked a question that had been answered in part before. What I really wanted to ask is, Ate there any part numbers or definitive data plate to identify a bad fan? I do not want to rely on feeling the fan edges, as that may or may not lead to a correct decision on whether to replace the fan. I believe it will be an another expensive procedure.

Thanks to any and all who may be able to provide more information.

Fan identification:  If you see "FIBERS" (i.e. fiberglass) replace the fan!  That simple.

Brett,

You were right, but when I posed the question, I wasn't near the coach, which was in the shop. Today I crawled into the engine compartment and tried to assess the fan, which was covered with enough residual road oil to make it hard to determine it's composition. However, I posted a picture and was able to confirm that mine is, in fact, the fiberglas fan. I have received info for a replacement fan, and as soon as I can confirm that this source is not selling amother fiberglas fan, I'll get it ordered.

Thanks again for the information.

He did give me the p/n earlier. I'm calling the supplier in the morning to order.

Thanks!

Not saying My way is the only or best way.But you might show my post to your shop for how I went about it. In my opinion My way was the  easiest way  I could come up with. Anyway....

I appreciate this info, and the photos certainly confirm the obvious difference in fan blades.

One thing that strikes me though, is that there is no way short of cutting the fan shroud to remove/replace the fan. Did FT think the fan would never have to be replaced?

You could take the whole shroud off with the fan ad a assembly. BUT Getting to the bolts is a bitch. That's why I chose to cut my shroud on the corners at the bottom.. I had slips left over from my HVAC days and they worked great to put it back together. Anybody that does sheet metal can make you one a couple dollars max.
Or take bolts out of fan. Remove the 3 belts from fan clutch. Remove air line to fan clutch. Remove the 4 fan clutch bolts that hold it to the block and pull fan clutch assembly out of the way. Then fan should come out top or bottom without cutting shroud.I decided cutting sheet metal was easier than dealing with that heavy fan clutch assembly taking a chance if it slipping out of my grip and putting a hole in a two thousand dollar radiator. But that is another option.
