Fog Lights/Running Lights

Dan, on my coach the headlights have to be on and the Aux Lights switch on the side panel has to be on.  It would be nice if you could have clearance lights and the running/fog lights on w/o headlights.  I am sure it is possible with some wiring mods but I havent looked that far.

No clue as to how to change on on a 2002.

My 96 is the same. Headlights on, Aux switch on.

I'd heard it was illegal in California to run just fogs & running lites, but did it many times when coming through the valley on I-5 around Sacramento. If I traveled in fog areas, that would be on the top of my list to have re-wired. I used my roof spotlight on the fog line, shutting down for oncoming. Worked perfect, was never pulled over!

In order to change the bulbs, they are accessible from the back side if you lie on the ground and reach up.  If I remember, it's a 1/4 turn to get the socket out and then the bulb will come out for replacement.

One of my sockets overheated and needed to be replaced.  It is a chevy light module.

If you wish to be able to turn on fog lights without turning on the headlights, the solution is very simple.  I can tell you how I did it on our '93 U280.  The concept should be the same on newer coaches.  It only requires looking at the appropriate 12V wiring diagram to determine which exact wire requires relocation.

My fog lights are powered by the AUX/LT relay located under the lift-up dash cover.  The relay receives its power from the 20amp AUX LTS fuse, located under the dash cover.  The brown "control" wire that activates the relay comes from the AUX LT rocker switch on the instrument panel.  The AUX LT rocker switch receives its power from a brown wire that comes off the headlight switch.  This brown wire is not powered unless the headlight switch in "ON".  That is why your fog lights won't work until you turn the headlights are on.

SO, all you have to do is identify the brown wire that runs from the headlight switch to the AUX LT rocker switch.  Then remove the end of the wire that is attached to the headlight switch, and relocate it to a "always hot" power source.  These are easy to find under the dash by using a 12V test light.  Once the brown wire is attached to a "always hot" power source, your fog lights will work any time you turn on the AUX LT rocker switch.

Of course, you must pay attention and not leave the fog lights on when you shut off your engine, lest you deplete your start battery.  The red light on the rocker switch should provide adequate reminder to turn it off.

OR, you could attach the brown wire to a "hot with ignition" power source.  Then, the fog lights would work independently of the headlight switch, but only when the ignition switch is "ON".

Does a 2002 FT have the 2001 Silverado headlights like my 2003 FT has?  And was it a day time running light bulb socket?  If it was you may want to check the socket on the other side for overheat.

I changed out my day time running light bulbs (2) on my 2001 Chevy Silverado a couple of years ago from incandescent to LED.  The sockets would become burned and the reflector's would lose their chrome finish due to the high high heat generated by the incandescent bulb being constantly ON in a small, confined space.  At least that's what I attributed it to because none of the other sockets or chrome parts were damaged. 

I also changed to LEDs in the FT for the same reasons, even though I'm an incandescent guy.

The whole idea of fog lights is that they shine "under" the fog to illuminate the road markings without lighting up the fog like low beams do.  The U.S. seems to have missed this in that states require the head lights on with the fog lights.  I am quite an expert at fog driving coming from the land of mists (UK).
