Genny repair around phoenix

Issco or rocky mountain onan generator repair
in Avondale AZ. Which to choose. I see the foreum group recommends issco. What is the reputation from the forum group regarding the on an shop in Abendals Az? Thanks

Robert Featherstone / ISSCO is the guy for us. He comes to us, no shop to drive to. Knows all, is experienced and is highly recommended.

When it comes to getting the job done, it is the quality of the tech. With Robert we know the tech. With Cummins/Onan you are dealing with the big shop, not the tech, where you have no control or idea who will be doing the job. Each choice has advantages and disadvantages . . .

My generator was back firing so had it worked on at rocky mountain onan generators. 3.5 hrs later they said it was points that would not adjust, they were bottoming out and would not adjust to proper gap
 so they replaced points. Everything fine, drove it home and parked it. 3 days later started it up and it started back firing within a half min just like before. It died within 30 secs and the last back fire was really load almost like an explosion. Waited a few mins and tried to restart it and I could hear a noise like a squeaky fan belt and then the noise stoped. Went outside to use starter so I could hear what was happening and when I would press the start button I would just hear a slight hum. Maybe I should have had Issco look at it in retrospect. I guess I did not want to pay the 75 dollars fee plus 2 dollars a mile. So I will be taking it back to rocky mountain and will see what to do once they look at it again. Just wanted the forum's opion. This is going to be interesting. It will be something simple or monumental. Will wait a wk or so to have it looked at. We have plans for quartzite and I have a portable Honda genny that I will use temporarily. See you in a q site tomarrow.

Bob,

This sounds like a sticking exhaust valve.  It could have stuck open and hit the top of the piston. Doing this can either bend or break the valve stem causing the engine to lock up.

Sounds like you have an Onan,what is the exact model and fuel,easier for us to research.

There are conversions out there to eliminate points but we need more info to search!!

John 44, I have an onon l.p. 1986. 436 hrs.  I will get the model for you when I get to coach. I guess this is going to be an expensive fix.

I was in the end pleased with rocky mnts in Avondale and they have a tech doing nothing else but gens I saw. I am certain when you go back that they will find the problem and fix it. I went thru that kind of issue with our coach on an electrical issue and was treated fairly in the end. They even installed a lift pump for free that I supplied to offset the time factor.

To John and others, following up on my generator. It is a 1986 onan 6.5 lp. Model # 6.5nhe,  eng serial number b 863983466. When I left the business the gen set was running and I shut it off 3 days later I started it up and it started back firing just like when I brought it in. If they had turned it off and turned it back on then they would have been responsible for the malfunction bit since it was in my possession they may not stand behind it even though it is most likely something to do with the repair. I do know it was back firing a multiply occasion while they were working on it
Almost 3.5 hrs to diagnose and fit new poimts I,Audi,v run time. Seems excessive

I would go back and just tell them that you switched it off and tried to start it and it did the same issue again. They are a large company and I really feel that they will fix it as what you were charged for did not fix it.

I will send a text to Dave Metzger as he was an expert on gensets and the ones like yours. Wish he was able to respond for sure, he was such a nice guy in person.

Did they replace the condenser? Sounds like it could be bad.

Thanks red tractor, that USED to be standard operating procedure, not sure if younger techs get it. 3.5 hour shop time probably included a Google search and a YouTube or two.
