Splendide WD802 (2000 FT) start-up concerns

We're baaaaaack.... and the questions have begun!  As some of you have read, George shared that we had sold our little 19-ft 2006 Airstream Bambi (aka the "rolling motel room"), that we purchased after we sold our 36-ft 2003 U295 in June, 2014, and earlier this week purchased another 36-ft FT... a 2000 U295 from a Foreforums member here in Houston.  He was the second owner, and purchased it back in 2010.  Here is George's "announcement":  Long-distance buying?

The coach includes a Splendide WD802 that was original to the coach in 2000.  The PO explained that they used the Splendide very rarely, and it has likely been over a year since its last use.  They could not remember if the Splendide was run when they used the coach in August of last year.

My question is what should I be concerned with, or looking for, regarding starting this Splendide for the first time.  This model (2000 WD802) appears to be quite different from the 2100XC that we had in the '03 coach.

I welcome your thoughts and advice regarding getting this Splendide back into "action" (I'm not a fan of campground laundries)... but want to be sure I don't end up with a "flood" or other problem!

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Pat,

Welcome back to the Foretravel cult!

I would run an empty load first. Run the shortest cycle and don't dry. Be close by and check frequently. Keep some towels close by just in case. Make sure it drains at the end of the cycle. If all goes well risk a towel or 2 and do a full run.

Let us know how it goes.

see ya

Check the filter screen pre-flight. Don't ask. Did you download the "manual"?

I would replace both water hoses and pull it out and make sure the drain hose is in good shape. I would run a short cycle with it out before I pushed it back in so I could look at the shut off valves in case the gaskets have dried out.

Just an FYI

If anyone is going to go to the trouble to replace the hoses while the unit is out change out the water fill valve also.  Make sure you get a fill valve that has standard threads so you can get off the shelf replacement hoses from your favorite home improvement store.  Splendide metric hoses are $$$ each.

Just for giggle's sake, I would pull the unit and replace the hoses and shut-off valves.  I recommend and use stainless steel braided supply lines and quarter turn ball cock valves.  Like others have mentioned, I would run the shortest sequence with no laundry to make sure that the pump is not leaking.

If a leak is observed the manibloc is a lot easier to access than the shutoff valves.

I replaced both hoses with the stainless version did not have to change valve (might should have) but hose screwed on and snugged up with no leaks. Also changed both on-off valves to the 1/4 turn ball valves, the old valves have seats and packing around stem and will eventually start leaking.

The "Washer Lady" is reporting back....

Since we were already at FOT and in a bay on Friday... we had (my hero!) Dave Flanagan check out the Splendide for us and give us his "go-for-launch" - and he did!

As you suggested, Ken, I ran a rinse-only cycle (warm, so both hoses would be in use).  No problems.  Prior to that, I turned on the spin cycle and did the drain filter maintenance.  Doing this during the spin cycle (as the manual and a sticker on the drain filter door suggest) resulted in only a slight dribble of water onto the towel I had placed beneath the filter door.  Excellent!

I'm just finishing a full wash cycle with a couple of sacrificial washcloths and hand towels... then on to the dry cycle.

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions!

And.... a bit more follow-up.

I was finally able to test out the dry cycle with a small load of washcloths and hand towels.  It seems that the pump cycles on/off every 10-15 seconds during the dry cycle.  A bit of "Googling" and it appears that this is "normal" for my Splendide 2000 model WD802M.

Being a bit skeptical, I called Splendide's Westland Sales & Service in Clackamas, OR (Splendide Laundry Centers Customer Support Center).  The technician explained that this was indeed normal.  I replied that I did not recall from 5 years ago that my 2100XC made that noise (of course, I don't recall what I had for breakfast... but that's a whole 'nuther story!).  He patiently stated that the 2100XC did cycle the pump on/off during the dry cycle, but that it was much quieter and less noticeable.

So there you have it!
