Glynn that tire is SEVERELY damaged. Like Brett said hope you are not going to run very far on it. Looks like it has been curbed. As always DWMYFG as they say 😎

After reading lots of posts about this, and after a LONG discussion with Greg at Herman Power, we went from Michelin to Toyo M177 for our trip into Mexico. I never was crazy about the very narrow first groove the tire has. It picked up gravel way too easy. Anyway, no conplaints on ride or handling....BUT....I lost a chunk of out brand new tire on a rough Mexican road. We'll see how I am treated when in Nac early May

That outside sipe is prone to getting tore off. I had to climb many curbs in the crane business and if it is only the siped outside tread damaged and no cords showing I would feel safe myself wearing the tire out. But DWMYH

But cord IS showing. And the split is much longer than just the section of missing rubber.

I agree with craneman. Unless that tire has a cut further into the tread or a bulge I wouldn't worry about it.

Shoulder Groove - Called a "defense groove" or "decoupling groove" or "shoulder wear protector" or "pressure distribution groove" by some tiremakers, it is a thin circumferential groove near the apex of a tire's shoulder. This groove creates a narrow rib along the shoulder. The concept is that it will wear faster than the adjacent shoulder rib, thereby minimizing shoulder edge wear.

Glenn, I had a piece just a bit smaller than that get ripped from my front old Michelin tyre before hanging over to Toyos a few years back, and I drove with it for thousands of miles with no problem. Now here is the fun bit. I used some black polyurethane Chem link M1 caulking to fill that void and it was still on the tyre when I replaced them!
Yes, sounds nuts but is a fact and one of the reasons I believe so much in this product and use it as my main caulking for all projects.
The local Kal Tire shop (a large BC dealership) could not believe it, but is a fact.
So, in my opinion as long as there is only that outside thin piece is missing and not a cut down to webbing? then I would say you are OK till you get back to H Powers. DWMYH

Brett,I think that is not the chord but the way the rubber was torn off and with the dust on it it does resemble woven chord.

Thanks guys. BELIEVE me... if cord was showing, I wouldn't have moved the coach. I am trying to find a Toyo dealer near San Miguel de Allende, but that is a challange. I sent Herman Powes a photo and explanation to see what they say. I have tire monitors, drive conservatively, and keep my fingers crossed....

Is that a front or outside rear? What is that fabric material I see, and is the tread separated in that area. If it was a front and I where going to continue to run it, I would move it to the rear outside. But that's just me. I agree that it is just the rubber covering. Buttt is the tread area been damaged as well, hard to tell from the picture.

I would check/call tiresdirect.net, I bought 6 M170z H rated for 2 coach bucks out the door and free shipping. I had a mobile truck service company install them for $300 along with centramatics. I was in a remote area picking up the coach with 10 year old tires.

Here's their Toyo line, they're currently advertising 17% off and free shipping. Rudy Legget has some good tire connections too that will buy your old tires if your headed that way.

Thanks to all for the help . I will look into the Leon site, and see what needs to be done. Thanks for that effort, Pierce... very helpful. It's back rear, so I can continually check it. This is a great community...one of the MANY reasons we bought a FT.

We've been running Toyo M154, H rated for the past 3 years, replaced the Firestones that had timed out. We have a 2000 U270-40.
Rides, tracks and drives well.

Glen -That tire is scary. I remember seeing a picture a friend had from a tire shop in Mexico. Large truck tire with a sheet metal plate thru bolted to the sidewall, all sealed up with goop. NOT for highway speed. But when you've got nothing you do what you have to. Mexican ingenuity at its best.

Fourth set of Toyos from Les Schwabb on different diesels. Also this last time went with Toyo M154 H rated per their recommendation. They litterly have installed 1,000s of rv tires in their Junction City location. I trust their experience and recommendation. I've found them one of the few dealers to explain the characteristics of different tires, traction in wet, directional stability, etc. The only dealer that asked me how and where I would be using my rv to aim me in the right direction.

Sorry the "copy and paste" doesn't line up. These are prices including FET delivered to a dealer. You still pay mount and balance and any local tax. In many cases, you can subtract some for trade in value of your old tires.

David; I am a FMCA member and got a better rate on tires without using them. Just an FYI. Shop around and you will be surprised on the different prices no matter what brand of tire!
