propane tank fill connection check valve

Often when I fill the propane tank, the check valve sticks and it takes a wrap with a hammer to get it to seat.  This last time the filler person told me of a screw on fix for this condition.  There is a screw on check valve that screws onto the existing fill connection that you can fill through.  It just backs up the existing check valve.  I bought one from them, but they are also available on line.  The person that sold it to me stated that it should be considered temporary and I should fix the original when I empty the tank.  Has anyone used one of these and if so, did you leave it on permanently??  Seems to me that it could stay on permanently.  Thanks and have a great day  ----  Fritz

I just had the opposite problem.  I tried to fill my tank last week, but it was a no go.  The propane supplier could not fill through the valve.  I pushed on the center button and got a little gas spurt, but still no go.

I just ordered a new valve and will replace it when the tank is nearly empty.

If a Propane Bottle will not fill, disconnect the fill line and tap the bottom on the ground, there a slide over fill valve inside that get's hung up

That 1-1/4" Acme thread check valve is really a double check valve and if it doesn't want to seat you need to run your tank down and replace it.  FWIW it used to be called a "Prest-o-lite" valve.

My other coach came with an obsolete auto stop valve that I replaced.

That being said, some propane stations, those who cater to older propane systems routinely use an external check valve, and if your valve doesn't hold, you just bought their check valve.

Our coach has a very large capacity propane tank with a liquid valve that was originally used for propane generators. This is in addition to the normal vapor valve. With a diesel gen, our liquid valve is caped off.

No reason to run this style propane tank down to change fill valve because a propane dealer can quickly empty tank into another empty tank using the liquid valve.

In fact, a dealer did just that and even gave us credit for all the propane transferred.

I *thought* my Onan was running on liquid propane, bet when I looked closer it runs on the vapor.  I was trying to run my tank empty to check on its volume, because 174# looked like a type, but as close as I was to the end, yup, it takes 40+ gallons to fill.

Here in southern Georgia the propane dealers seem to aim their business model towards commercial customers.  I had my last tank pumped out and the fees to do so equaled the price for the propane.

I have had problems with trying to fill the propane tank at some of those small store type fill stations. They seem to have small low volume pumps, most likely to keep inexperienced operators from getting into trouble. Never had an issue at a real propane dealer off a truck or bulk tank.
