I was wondering what I should be expecting to pay to get the engine and generator serviced.

Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #1 – July 18, 2019, 07:49:54 am Oil Change and filter runs $275 to $400 depending on where you get it done. Motorhomes of Texas in Nacogdoches has been towards the low end when we have had it done their (they have discounted service deals usually in the winter) and Cummins Coach Care has been towards the upper end. A set of fuel filters is about $60-$75. I buy them on line and change them myself. Not too hard and your should carry at least one set with you. I carry two. You should change a set of fuel filters yourself one day so that you know where they are and how to do it. Do it somewhere safe and easy. Better there than learning on the side of the road. Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #2 – July 18, 2019, 08:06:57 am Thanks Roger, I changed them all on the previous coach. We're currently not near my shop In Oklahoma and would prefer to do it all myself. I don't like paying people to do things I'm very capable of doing myself. My problem is that I don't have the time or the place to do it right now. I've got it at the Cummins dealer and they quoted me three times the high end for the engine and generator. Quote Selected

Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #4 – July 18, 2019, 12:53:54 pm That quote sounds like they are doing the 100k Miles valve adjust. Also replace the cam position sensor if not already done and if you have the same one we had in our 97 as they short our internally. The other updated part on ours was the ambient air pressure sensor. Neither are expensive or hard to install. You probably have a too low of a temp setting fan drive. It turns the radiator fans on full on a warmed up engine. Minus 50 hp or more. Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #5 – July 18, 2019, 01:24:14 pm If you go to Cummins and say service the coach they do much more than an oil change. It was about $1000 here. If you say you want an oil and filter change it will be $350-$400 (at least here). Be sure you ask for specific tasks and understand what is going to be done anywhere you take it. Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #6 – July 18, 2019, 01:58:16 pm Thanks for the input Bob, they're definitely doing the oil. Roger, that makes me feel a little better. Not that it's a good price. It says service coach change oil and filters. Plus doing the generator. Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #7 – July 18, 2019, 02:08:37 pm Running the rack(valve adjust) and replacing my already partially shorted cam position sensor smoothed the engine noticeably. The cam sensor has two circuits inside it. Potted plastic i it's internal end. Oil soaks it. Both short out.Tow truck time. Replacement unit is solid metal on its tip. Later ISM engines had a backup way on top of the cam position sensor to sense the cams position on top of the m11 way. My shop foreman was walking behind my coach and stopped as he heard the erratic idle the bad sensor created.Audible. Afterwards smooth idle. Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #8 – July 18, 2019, 03:14:09 pm Thanks Bob, I'll look into the cam sensor. Maybe that's why sometimes it doesn't want to fire? Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #9 – July 18, 2019, 03:31:14 pm Yes probably. Hard to not have a diesel fire. Unless the injectors do not know when to fire. You really need to change both sensors and the fan drive controller and install a noisier resonator.Major difference in power and reliability and at least one to one and a half mpg increase.Low rpm torque increase is the best part. They were working on it this morning while I was trying to figure out how it could possibly be that much. The Cummins off of 150 you mentioned in my other post, I that the one in Cloverdale? That's where I had it. I can't remember which exit it was though. Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #12 – July 18, 2019, 06:16:44 pm Paid just shy of $500 for engine oil, fuel filters and air filter and generator service at Cummings in Cincinnati - do you have the Cummings power club membership - that knocked the price down a bit Quote Selected
Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #13 – July 18, 2019, 07:26:28 pm I do have a Cummins Power Club card. It pays for itself every year. $500 for what you had done seems about right. Quote Selected

Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #18 – July 19, 2019, 11:07:21 am Interesting thread as our M11 is nearing the 100,000 mile mark. Especially the cam sensor replacement. Our 450 will be going in for servicing this fall and will be having that sensor taken care of..are there any other sensors that should be proactively replaced? checked? Re: Cummins 450 engine/generator service cost Reply #19 – July 19, 2019, 11:28:25 am Ambient air pressure is the other one, Cummins went to an external mount sensor. If you idle your engine and hear random firing at the rear grille from the engine the cam sensor is oil soaked and mistiming the injectors Quote Selected
