Replacing mirror turn signal lights

I've been going over the coach and repairing or replacing all the clearance and turn signal lights that did not function.  The last to do were the lights on the rearview mirror arms.  I thought this would be a simple job, but of course it wasn't.

The first problem was getting the screws out that held the light fixtures.  All were frozen and required multiple applications of penetrating oil.  Two had to be drilled out.  Removal of the screws was easier after I took the mirrors off the coach.

I decided to remove the mirror assemblies because I had to drill out the broken screws and because a grommet had been installed on the wires (motor control wires and those for the turn signal) which made it difficult to move the wires within the mirror assembly.  Because of this, it was difficult to get enough wire out to splice in the new fixture wires.  In addition, removing the mirrors also allowed me to disassemble them and clean/lubricate the various parts (Corrosion X).  I didn't take the actual mirrors off which are glued to their motors.

Removing the mirror assemblies is fairly easy since the mirror motor control wires are connected with a plug assembly.  However, I had to cut the turn signal wires which was not a problem since I was going to replace them.

I was able to find the replacement light fixtures (two-wire) from Ramco Engineering.

While installing the lights I covered the two wires with shrink wrap where it goes through the mirror assembly joint to give them a bit more resistance to wear within the light fixture since I had removed the grommet.

Before reinstalling the mirrors I used Mother's Chrome polish which removed a lot of the corrosion.  I used 3M 4200 caulk to reseal the mirror assembly against the gel coat.  Using denatured alcohol as a solvent make cleanup relatively easy.  The motor wire plug assembly fits into a cavity on the back of the mounting plate.

If the before picture of the passenger side body mount is anything like the driver side, how did you get all that crud off?

Nice job and write up George.

I tried trading out my mirror lights for led and found they did put out as much light. The where highly directional and mostly shined down instead of out the sides. I think I'm going back to the incandescents.

see ya
