JOEY sleeping in!

Roadside Joey Bed locked in the 'in' position, latch moves all the way around and binds. No info in the FT files, nada in the manual I have. Looks like a bearcat to crawl back in there and I'm not sure what I'm looking for, or if I can ever see where the problems is. Note the wear on the paint; I think the PO had problems before. Any help? Thanks. M

Have you opened the Joey bed on the other side to see how the latch mechanism works?

I've looked in there for that reason, but can't see what's what. I'll look closer front and back of the starboard Joey with a flashlight. It feels like the latch is still connected, but everything I've done to free it has not worked

Ya, don't drive until you figure it out-- if not locked in place, it can slam back and forth, particularly destructive if heavily loaded.

Sorry, not first hand info on the locking mechanism-- never had a problem  with one.

Ya, there are A LOT of stories about Joe escaping and doing some serious damage. Thanks, Brett.  ^.^d

Mike,
Here are a couple photos showing the latch. Give you an idea of what's going on. There's a cog that drops into a notch in the rail. The control rod just pulls the cog out of the notch.

1. Green arrow points to latch cog as it moves toward the locking position. Red arrow points to the locking position.
2. Locked. Red arrow points to the cog locked into the notch in the rail.

You might be able to reach in there and pry it to pop it out of the notch. You'll figure it out.

Thanks, John. Yup, Joey is locked in the 'full sleep' position and it seems like a rivet on the latch has let go( from what I can see after looking at my other one pulled all the way out). The PROBLEM, is, unlike you, I have zero clearance in there to work on it; it's going to be mostly by feel with a helper to move the latch from outside. It NEVER ends, does it?

May be a lot easier to remove the joey bed to work on it.  As I recall, after unloading, pull it out as far as it will go, then lift up on the outboard end to clear the end piece and the whole thing comes out.  Pretty easy with two people-- one on either side. I did that when I properly mounted the base. Have inspected a few coaches where they just drilled down through the floor and through bolted it-- no plate or anything else underneath to spread the load.  Pretty quickly the bolts broke through the fiberglass, allowing water into the basement structure.

A reasonable solution is to use fairly good size (like 4"X4") aluminum plates as "washers" on the under side.  Suspect I way "over-built" it when I used a 3" hole saw from above through the basement top layer of FG, removed the insulation and epoxied in 3" marine plywood plug of the same thickness as the box beams (two 3/4" thick pieces as I recall).  Redrilled mounting hole and used an aluminum backing plate below. Ain't never going to move!

Only one slight problem: "Joey is jammed in bed" ! I'm going to try to reach over the rail (on my belly!) and release the catch and pull the bed out to get to it, I can barely get my hand down there!  Wonder what is entailed  on 'service' silocone spray?

Update:Joey is out of his bed!  By feel, got the latch released (the handle keeper of the rod had broken before and someone had used a nail instead and then bent it again). The jolt had bent the fork for lock and release, so I got that straight and put it back together with some pounding with a borrowed drift and hammer. Horrible spot to work, but I was not going to live without it working. Thanks to JOR for the pics! I figured the PO had it either slid out/in too fast or did not treat the opening and closing with kid gloves rather than 'Cowboying' it!

With a person on each side and, lifting at the outer end, the Joey bed easily comes out for repair.

I was about to get some help and try that, but (A) no help around and (B) was worried I would not be able to get it back in if I could not fix it Not to hi-jack my own thread, but, What is this, Brett?

Some Joey beds  slide both ways , and have two latches,  one of my Joey beds slides one way, and has a single latch.  I have two Joey beds in my U320 and that's how they work.

Here's the site we just moved into, plan to keep it as a home base, so built a little barrier to ward off the Javelinas and give us some privacy: refinished the tables and use them as a work station. The slab is perfect with the stool and Joey: no getting up to find the right tool!  ^.^d
