Cummins fuel filter on enegine

Had a fuel leak, and found the small spin on fuel filter mounted on the passengers side of the 8.3 Cummins was the culprit. I looked in the service records and they were current. Problem is, a mechanic that doesn't know it's there only changes the main filters. This was so old, the drain valve was crystalized from heat. I ordered one from Napa and it's now fine. It's tough to see. I found the best way to replace it is from the top with the bed up. Just a heads up. It started leaking in my garage so I can't bitch! Bought 3 of them with shipping from Fleetfilter.com for $37.55 shipped

If a tech only knew of the single filter, there is an extremely high likelihood that you have the WRONG MICRON FILTER.

If only a single filter, it must be of the micron rating speced by the engine manufacturer for that fuel system.

If two filters, you would never use the same micron primary followed by the same micron secondary (the one on the engine) filter.  The primary would be courser (think of it as the "rock catcher") and the secondary the fine filter.

Suggest you post the PN for both primary and secondary fuel filter or if you have access to the info, verify that you have the correct course, followed by fine filter elements.

And the primary filter element??

10 micron secondary is a little on the course side-- many use a 5 micron secondary.

Cummins or your manual should be able to tell you their requirement on how fine a filter (secondary filter) they recommend.

Ok. Thanks guys. I'll stay with the 10 micron for now.  I'm not full time and put 2500 miles a year on average.

Dan,

When you get a chance, DO post the PN for your primary filter (the one mounted to the chassis, not the engine).

We just want to make sure both are "compatible".  Said another way, if it turns out to be a 10 micron, followed by a 10 micron secondary, it is NOT correct.

Ok. Just hung up with Cummins, 1-800-286-6467 and here is what they require for micron filtration
fuel spin on FF-5052= 10 microns
fuel-water separator spin on FF-1280=  20 microns
Oil filter LF-9009=  30 microns
That number can be called 24-7 and it's free

I always double check any source for parts with this.  Enter engine serial number from engine plate, and you are on your way.

Genuine Cummins Parts

https://catalog.cumminsfiltration.com/catalog/CatalogSearch.do?_locale=en&_region

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cummins.filtration

Cummins lists my Part Number 3843760, FS 1251, 20 micron, for fuel water seperator.  I have a 97 cummins 6C8.3 325 hp.

Beamalarm shows my orig filter to be Racor B32002, it was and still is avaiable at 30 micron. When I purchased my U295 with 6C8.3 it had Baldwin BF5813 which is 25 micron, also has water drain built in.  20 to 30 will be ok.

I haven't got to the main filter yet. It's 14 degrees here. That will be next and then I should have the correct filtration for fuel.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions

Jack L, Looks like the Racor B32002 includes the sight bowl and is a 30 micron. The Baldwin is the cheapest for the filter only. I'll order a Racor. Looks like the Cadillac of filters
Thanks for the info

Perfect.  A 30 primary followed by a 10 secondary is a good "stair step" from course to fine.

All fuel filters with the see-thru water bowl I've found are 30 micron. Cummins recommends  20 microns.  With a 10 micron on the engine and since it has a 30 on it and runs fine, I would say I'm good with a 30. Any thoughts
