3 hydraulic filter change tips

I'm going to change my 3 filters in the reservoir and read the Ft notes. Any tips beyond that will be appreciated. They show just draining with a pump, but any reason I can't use the actual drain plug?

Whatever is easier for you, pay attention to the posts about installing the o-ring and not loosening the dipstick too much as it could
fall inside.

What does that critter hold in oil volume with a filter change

Be very careful when you remove the wingnut. It's under some tension and will pop up and then drop down into the reservoir. It's possible to fall into the hose which means you're gonna get to do a lot of extra work.

When I changed my filters I got a 1/4" in longer carriage bolt (1/4 - 20 X 1-1/2") and added a Nylock nut on the end to keep the dipstick from coming loose and falling into the reservoir.

I use 5' of cheap clear PVC hose from any hardware store.  Remove the lid, slide one end of the hose all the way to the bottom of the tank, suck on the other end until I see fluid, lower it and let it siphon out all the fluid.

DO NOT remove the wing nut, large washer or any filter until all the outer fluid is removed, or you will allow outer UNFILTERED fluid to mix with filtered/clean fluid.

Pretty easy job.

When I go to websites that have these filters, it shows a quantity of 6? Do the new ones stack 6 instead of 3?

They make a single filter that can take the place of the 3 filters BUT you have to remove the oil tank from it's mount to be able to install it due to height restrictions.

Personally I always took the filters out after draining, and cleaned the tank out inside with clean rags.

Little carb cleaner on the rags works.

In my service records I have no proof they have ever been done. I ordered 6 and a gasket from Dieselpartsdirect.com. My town had none.

Supporting Richard on drain plug removal is messy. Plug may not come out easy and may not go back leakproof.  A $10 drill pump can empty and direct old oil into a container of choice.

Since that pump takes 30 hp to operate, any reason I can't use 15-40 full synthetic to cut the friction in it when I service it?

No reason other than if you don't have synthetic in the engine, you have to carry 2 different oils on the coach for emergencies.

Dieselpartsdirect called my and can't get the parts for three weeks. I canceled and called Brad at FT and they are cheaper and have them! Lesson learned

Check for the second reservoir (Power Steering) which is smaller than the reservoir for the fans.  If so, you might parts for it at the same time to save on second freight bill.

Mine is a Cummins 8.3  300hp. I do not see a power steering pump on it. I'll read my manual but great idea. Thanks

I used to have one of those pumps. I burned it up sucking gear oil out but before that it worked it's little heart out. I bought the 5 foot clear hose today, i'll just do that for speed. Thanks

Got it apart today and drained. I'll pull the filters tomorrow, clean the canister and filler up! The way the gasket was baked on, I'm not sure anyone ever changed it for many years. The oil looks fine and isn't burnt smelling.
Thanks for all the help. Made the job easy!!!!
