Check engine code scanner

Looking for recommendation on purchasing a check engine code scanner for our 2004 u295 with an ISL 400. There are two plug in by the dash , a round one which I believe is the 9 pin HD plug and a rectangular one with a cover that reads diagnostic.  Can either one be use for scanning  check engine code ?

The 9 pin is what is used for engine codes.  It uses J1939 protocols. There are several systems you can use to get these codes as well as see additional engine and transmission info while driving.  There are three that I know of: ScanGauge D, Bluefire, and the Silverleaf VMSpc that you can buy in this forum in the commercial listings VMSpc Kits for 2020. 20% off until April 30, 2020 .  I have used ScanGuage D which is a simple and inexpensive option that my motor-home came with. If you want to see the different vehicle specific parameters that scangauge can read see my posting ScanGuage D TXD and RFX Data for 2002 ISL Engine .  I have tried to use Bluefire, but found it to be unstable (bluetooth connection would continually drop out) and the last time I tried to use it, it actually caused engine hesitation until I removed the adapter.  I haven't used Silverleaf VMSpc, but many people on this forum have and like it.

This coach and our last one have Silverleaf.  I wouldn't be without it.  Silverleaf has given me instant notification of a problem three times, twice by having a digital temp readout that I noticed before the analog gauge moved much at all.  The other time a speed sensor failed and we were able to keep driving despite the dinger going off because we knew what was causing it.  The great big digital speedometer and displaying what the cruse is set on is awfully nice too.

The rectangular one is for the transmission.  Some info on the transmission comes through the round plug the rectangular one is directly to the transmission ECM for troubleshooting and changing set points. (like how your mode button operates)
