Transmission Temp Sender

Noticed this wire hanging from side of the transmission(pic 1).  Am I correct in assuming that it connects to the button on the elbow on the driver side of transmission (pic 2)?

Yes

 That is a poor place for that connection that feeds the dash gauge.
