Hydraulic Fluid/Oil Change


From other posts it is my understanding the reservoir on the drivers side in the engine compartment is for "hydraulic" oil".  Label on the reservoir says Add Chevron Delo 400 Plus 15W-40 or equiv.

I tried links to old post with instructions and pictures that reference Barry's site...and the wayback time machine could not find it either. L

I gather I need three each Fleetguard 84101B filters, Foretravel 999-55A gasket and about a gallon of oil (for a 1997 U320)

Mark clamp to ensure it gets re-installed the correct way (otherwise it will not seal well and will leak)
Drain the oil, clean the tank, install new filters, install new gasket and replace oil

Is that correct?  Did I miss anything?

You will need a lot more than one gallon of oil.

And, it is critical that you siphon/pump out the oil from the outside of the filters (easy to access once the lid is removed) BEFORE removing the filters.  If you don't, you will be mixing the unfiltered oil and any debris with the filtered oil.

Also, a good idea to tape a trash sack over the area so dirt from above does not fall into the reservoir as you work on it.

Thanks Brett.  I appreciate the extra details and precautions.  Is siphon/pumping out the preferred method vs the drain plug?

Daydreamer.  My Hyd fan motors just got rebuilt which drained the tank.  Three new filters, new oring for the top cap and 3.5 gallons of oil.  Hope this helps

Either works, but, I would not go buy a pump just for that.

I am adverse to removing old drain plugs-- may be hard to seal. 5' of cheap clear plastic hose for a siphon is what I do.

The gasket isn't a Foretavel specific item, can be got off the net or many truck shops. That is the right number though.

Yep. Mine took 17 quarts of 15-40 semi-synthetic delo and the filters came with a new gasket for the top, but I did order from Brad at FT. I used the clear hose from Wolfs idea. Worked fine
1996 U295-36, Cummins 300hp, 8.3. Build number 4864. Vin number 1F97D536XTNO54271. Purchased October 31, 2019.

Changed hydraulic oil and filters. Not sure if it was needed, but do not have great maintenance records, so changed to establish a baseline.
 
Parts used for hydraulic oil service:
3 each hydraulic filters FleetGuard 84101B:  $13.00 each plus tax from MHC (not labeled, but believe they are PACAR brand)
3.5 gallons Delo 400 SDE 15-40 oil
1 each reservoir gasket FleetGuard 99955A:  $6.54 plus tax from Cummins:  they call it a OWS (Oil, Water, Separator) Parts Kit on the invoice.
Also added two containers of Bars stop leak to see if it helps the pump seals.
 
I used a $6.00 hand pump from Harbor Freight to pump the old out into 2.5 gallon containers I saved from the engine oil change.

The old seal looks okay, but is hard compared to the new one.  The outside of the reservoir had a light coat of oil and dirt, so hoping the new gasket will help keep it clean.

The old filters were labeled "This side up".  The new filters were not labeled, but I could not discern a difference between either end.

I received a parts quote from Foretravel and the prices were reasonable, but the $25 estimated shipping was hard to swallow when I could pick up everything locally. 

Frankly, I was shocked at the price for the gasket at Cummins.  I did not price the filters there.  Just assumed Cummins would be more expensive and only called them when I could not find the gasket locally. Already had the filters by that time.  I told the guy at the parts counter that is probably the cheapest Cummins part I will ever purchase. :)

The gasket is available at FindItParts and other online stores but shipping costs for that one item was $12 to $25.  The filters were also available on FIndItParts, but only in a case of six.

A very good idea, especially considering that the oil is filtered from the inside out. Any debris in the tank, on the outside of the filters, has direct access to the pump, steering gear, and radiator fan motors/valve gear.

Please confirm the large "suction" hose that feeds the hydraulic pump in on the OUTSIDE of the filter stack not in the middle???

It is on ours. Drain plug and supply are on the outside, return from cooler is in the middle.
