Dash Cowl Fitment

I don't know what else to call this thing. It's the instrument panel cover that opens up. (this is big) Mine has never latched properly so I replaced the brass latches which are the same ones used throughout these rigs. Anyhow, the problem was that the latches on the cushion weren't at the proper level to allow the top part to snap into place. If you have the same problem, the solution is to install a spacer under the stationary latch. Then you're downtown on your dash.

John, we put a ΒΌ" wood 'shim under each of the two hinges and see no reason to snap the dash cover in place with latches. Cover lays snug on top of the front of the dash face.

 I probably am misunderstanding your post. If you are not using the latches to latch the cover, why the shims?

Hi John,

Our cover did not sit tight on the dash front, so I lifted the back a little and now the cover sits tight and does not move a bit without any latches. Your cover could be different?

Our cowl does not latch.  I will eventually put your advice into practice.  So far, I open it regularly to check wiring, adjust the idle speed, or just to stare in amazement.

Ahhh... now I see. I think all of these are the same. Your solution would be fine on mine too but I figured as long as there were latches I might as well use them. Look at it this way. If that front tire blows and we head into the bar ditch and roll, that dash cover will remain snugly affixed to the dash!
