Donaldson in-line separators provide two-stage cleaning for unexpectedly heavy dust/moisture conditions.

When your truck is being used in heavier-than-anticipated dust or moisture conditions, you may not have to replace the entire air cleaner. The problem may be solved by adding a Donaldson in-line separator. This enables an over-highway vehicle, which usually sees only light dust, to be easily and economically adapted to off-road medium to heavy dust conditions.

Ordered H000878 today for my coach. Finally a fun project. Have been involved in the installation of these on two other coaches used in dusty conditions. No moving parts but exceptional operation. Dirty side of filter housing stays clean. Filters will be changed for time not dirty condition. They work really well. First learned of them on my Offroad car. Adds a additional vacuator valve that will have to be changed when air filter housing vacuator is replaced.  More to follow once parts get here.

Our 96 U270 came with one,works great,never had a water in air filter problem.

Scott, where are you going to fit it in?  Post a picture or two.  Wide range of prices, found one for $245.  Others for almost $600.

The one on my crane is mounted horizontal, might repurpose it to the coach crane doesn't get used anymore.

Yes $245 it installs in the vertical tube ahead of the left taillight . You cut out the length of the separator and add about three inches to the air filter Inlet and reuse the angle boot at air filter. I had a decent description of work and somehow lost post prior to posting. Thought of your event too. I actually think the vacuator valve in the air cleaner could be welded closed or at the very least reduced in size to prevent drawing water in thru it. I would never plan on being in that much rain but always better to plan for the worst.

They are made by different part numbers because of the drop for the vacuator valve tube. I didn't show the horizontal but they actually have higher performance numbers as I recall Than the vertical. Was amazed how much silt was piled up below the vacuator last year returning from Johnson valley. Entire engine was dusty, but there was a pile of silt below the vacuator. Un notable contamination on filter itself. 2002 u295

Read up on the vacuator,it actually opens and closes with engine rpm's,it's not going to "suck in water" it's made to get rid of
dust mainly and it does wear out and should be replaced periodically.Not sure where your air intake is but ours is above the left tail light on the side .

My air filter vacuator  valve is at the lowest point of the aft side of the air filter housing. Mine is four months old ,Donaldson part. I have to thank you because in taking a photo of it I found it had shrunk and was loose in air filter housing 👍 I will bond in place. Anyway new they close well. Mine is open but should close in operation

Removed air filter housing and fitted precleaner.

So I had measured down pipe and precleaner and thought they were the same size. The precleaner outlet side would easily fit over the down pipe. Spent some time and tapped open the inlet size to fit the Six inch down pipe. 18.5 inches removed would be about correct. Cut off pipe with sawzall. Put tape around pipe for cutting reference. So I added four inches to the 7" inlet to the filter.

It is powered coated and is tough to remove paint. Cut and rollered some Paintlock sheet I had for other projects Sandblasted housing were I was going to weld and paintlock also. Tig welded parts together, and resandblasted and painted heavily with industrial Krylon paint Black.

Mount straps for filter housing corroded a little so sandblasted and painted them also. Real pain to hold up and reassemble.

So the four inch extension moves the precleaner to coach left to clear rear hatch pivot. This is just forward of the left taillight area. The two clamps that came with precleaner, I used one on the down pipe and have one left over. The filter mount bolts are a real pain to remove and install but do able. The air filter at about 6k miles was not showing and Restriction. I replaced it do to all the silt from my own driveway. I really was surprised at the amount of silt in both the filter and housing. Before you put it all back together change the dr side rear docking light to an LED equivalent.  I have changed three of mine but not this one. Very hard to get to. Likely easier with all of that out.

You can wire the two rear docking lights to come on with the reverse lights too (with a few diodes so there is no unwanted lighting).  Not hard and very effective.  On the 2001 coaches the rear docking light are angled towards the rear, not so on other years.

Typically a very good idea. I'll have to back in there again for that. Just finished when I saw your post. I was already planning on installing Aux backup lights like I have in all my other cars. Already prewired  from 7 pin trailer socket wiring.  Long driveway with a dogleg in the middle to restrict spectators. I usually back up rather than turn around. So two things I would do different, first I would of sloped the 4 inch extension aft a 1/2 inch. When I closed rear door the air filter housing needed to be pushed forward to clear. Boot took up the slack, not worth changing, just reference for others, second I would of done sooner.

To be clear, are you saying you should have bought the 7in version (H000886)? I will verify the size on our coach as well. Looks like a good upgrade given that we are on commonly on dirt roads.

To be clear, are you saying you should have bought the 7in version (H000886)? I will verify the size on our coach as well. Looks like a good upgrade given that we are on commonly on dirt roads.

The vertical drop is six inches and the 90 deg boot converts to seven inches on the inlet to the air filter. The two additional changes would be to make the 7" diameter extension 5" long and to angle it aft on the air filter inlet about a half a inch to add additional clearance to the back of the coach without causing the air filter assembly to migrate aft and cause clearance issues with the rear engine door. I had to put a little twist on the rubber but and that would prevent that. Peter did that and it worked better.
