Dining Table Top

We have one of those table tops on a pole that slides in and out of our  dinette/sofa and it's rather small for the size of the sofa.  Does  anyone know who produces the table tops or has changed theirs in the past to something larger.

Thanks

We wanted a rectangular table to replace the football shaped original table for better function.  We started with cardboard mockups then a sheet foam cut to size and then made a walnut prototype to test all of the assumptions about fit.

The prototype rectangular walnut table is now in Jeff and Sandy's coach.

Some adjustments in size and stow position were made and the pedestal base was repositioned. A new cherry table top with mesquite inlays (wood courtesy of our good Texas friends), ebony pegs and sliding breadbox end keys in a Greene and Greene style now graces our coach.  Color is better than the pictures and it gets better with age.

Pedestal got moved an inch or inch and a half towards the couch. I am thinking about making it an inch shorter.  The table top is about right for normal chairs but the J shaped couch cushions are pretty soft and when we sink in a lower table would be better.

Another fun project that makes our coach more unique to us and more functional as well.

This is disgusting.

Not only is Robert a walking encyclopedia on control systems, electrical and mechanical engineering, now I learn that he is also a very qualified furniture maker.
I bet you he has also send letters and tips to " Fine Woodworking" in the past.

How is I hobby woodworker like me ever to build up his self esteem?

I took up woodworking approximately 10 years ago and built a very well equipped shop I like to spend time in.

I once read an editorial in "Fine Woodworking" by the late Andy Rooney, who was a hobby woodworker,  titled " The value of my tools and machinery far exceeds the value of the items I built."

I made that my motto.

But I know enough about cabinet building to be able to appreciate the good quality of finish in my U320.

Regards

Klaus

I also wanted a bigger, higher table top. I built a new solid cherry top that went over and clamped to the existing corian top. The next owner can decide to keep it or revert to original.

Correction,

My woodworking envy  is towards Roger, not Robert.

Not sure what the 09 Nimbus table was made of, but our 2012 is the heavy counter top material. Quartz or granite. My husband and I struggled with the weight but finally got it out to a dolly. It now resides in the garage. We probably gained a hundred pounds for the coach to carry. I have a small rectangle light weight table that fits into the pantry and I can use in a variety of ways, indoors and out.
I do admire Rogers woodworking skills. If my Dad had still been alive, I might have talked him into building one.

Thanks for the nice feedback.

Andy Rooney was an accomplished woodworker. I appreciated his craft. Like may things woodworking started as a youngster with my Dad and grew and matured over the next 60+ years. 20+ years of the New Yankee Workshop every Saturday morning probably started more woodworkers on this lifelong venture than anything else. Time seems to slow down for me in the shop while outside it speeds by.

I had a mechanic who worked for me that used to say "Norm Abrams is the only one in the world who uses $50,000 worth of equipment to build a $5 shoe shine box."

I too, worked to get to a point where I have the equipment and space to do the wood and metal work I want. When asked what I make, the standard answer is "sawdust and noise"

I do have a great appreciation for the skills that guys like Roger have.

Great Idea too - until I could have the custom top made.  Mine is heavy and granite or Corian
