Ouch

We were traveling through Houston a while back and bam! Got hit by an airborne alligator. Turns out the repair is about the same as a headlight upgrade so going with new headlights. Might even be able to drive at night. Took out the headlights too but I was able to find a couple used ones and glued them in place.

Only 2020 would have flying alligators.

I have found my coach overruns the upgraded headlights around 45-50mph. Not great but will do in a pinch.

You get the upgraded lights pointed in the right direction and they are worth the money in performance alone.. I seldom drive at night because I don't have to and plan around it but if I chose to I have the lights for it.All the trash lying in the road is why I try to park before dark.

I'll ask the dumb question,never saw a aligator in Houston,what's a airborne aligator?

One of those big chunks of semi truck tires we see on the side of the road. I was in traffic and couldn't really tell exactly where it came from. Sure made a racket when it hit.

This one's not airborne but it's a road alligator. I live south of Houston, see them all the time...

And the photo shows a Bandag tread separated from it's core. They're only glued along the edges so when they come off they tend to come off intact.

Dub, are you suggesting my headlights may not be aimed properly? Perhaps I have jumped to conclusions because the thought honestly hadn't occurred to me.

Elliot I understand there is two versions of the extreme headlights one costs more and works better

John,

Sorry to hear about your mishap. At least you're getting a headlight upgrade out of the deal. We did the Xtreme HL upgrade last year and difference is night and day. Even after experimenting with the aim of the original lights, I was uncomfortable driving at night above 40 MPH, anywhere off the big roads. Now it's no problem, but I still have to be careful making a turnoff on unlit back road intersections.

Scott, don't hold me to this but it was my understanding it was the Foretravel headlight conversion that had 2 prices. When I called they told me that one was about half price of the other. Also, there have been some posting on the forum that people weren't happy with the light given off by the cheaper Foretravel conversion!
I have never heard anyone say that extreme had 2 prices but I can be corrected!!!

Called the owner who bought my coach new.. He said he had the headlight conversion done at Foretravel after a wrecker damaged front end fiberglass.. He was 91 when I talked to him so he was describing the best he could but left me with no farther details. Chris may be on to something I only know my lights perform much better than most vehicles I have ever owned and certainly better than many here describe theirs.. Wouldn't hurt to check farther into differences.

We have the Xtreme conversation, got them a year ago and they are fantastic at night and in the rain.
I love driving at night, less traffic and peaceful. The old lights made driving impossible and the new ones were worth every cent we spent on them. Also added daylight running lights (same as Canadian coaches) and additional back up lights.

Just an aside on this damage. My insurance has a $1,000 deductible for comprehensive and $500 for collision. I paid the one G for this accident. Turns out if you run over something and it damages your vehicle, you have had a collision. If something is flying through the air and collides with your vehicle, you have not had a collision.

Wouldn't you think that possibly part of it was in contact with the ground? It didn't fly there on its own? Hate having to fight for your rights of their contract with you. Simply said you ran over a tire carcass and incurred damage? Unless you have video proving otherwise.

Yes. I have no idea where it came from. Might have just blown off a truck tire or maybe someone ran over it and it went flying. I described the accident as it happened so the deductible was $1,000. I suppose this is an insurance standard. The purpose of my post is to simply make everyone aware of the difference in the deductible depending on whether you run over something or get hit by something coming at you in the air. I know... weird but that's the way it is according to the insurance guys.

4 legged gator or tire gator. Could be either around Houston. Lived just outside Houston and have encountered both.

I could not avoid hitting a tread that had a standing loop in the middle of it with my car. The insurance did pay, minus the deductable, but charged me with having an accident (that's the law in Texas - hit something in the road and it's your fault). Have another accident and my insurance premium would have increased, since they considered me accident prone. That was about 6 years ago with no accidents since.
