“Queen chair” or co pilot chair, foot rest lift failed. 99 U295

Not unusual,  Villa,  FT has the gear box, as it is called that is the apparent problem..  $200. Which they apologize for the cost.  But apparently they have nothing else to source it from.
My ?? To U folk, any one found another source, or another idea of how to get this up, & hold it up, in a simple attractive way?

We are  casually looking, to replace both seat with something, current, that takes a little less space in the "queen chair" especially.

Any thoughts, &thanks for thinking about it.

Happy 1921, when we can, hopefully, all get out & join Willi & the boys, "on the road again"

Was it working and just stopped working or does it make any noise?

The foot rest on ours did not work when we purchased the coach.  Could hear a click/clunk when trying to raise or lower and could see the actuator move slightly, but nothing else.

I  assumed an actuator gear had broken or stripped, but turns out the 23 year old lubricant had gotten so hard and sticky the the actuator could not move the gears.  Cleaned it up with brake cleaner, re-lubricated and works good as new.  Lot of work getting it out and back in, but did not need any new parts.  A few pictures are in my leg rest post.

You might also want to see if any of the actuators on SmithRichards look like they will work.

Bill,

My experience was the same as DayDreamer's.  Unless you are sure the gear box is stripped, I would, as DayDreamer recommended,  first perform a very thorough cleaning of the gears.

The part Foretravel sells has been specially made for them according to David. The part has been upgraded so it wont fail as easily as the original part. You can contact Villa & they can ship you a new part. The plastic gear on the spline is what fails. That's what happened to mine. You can also order used parts from Coach Supply Direct. The gear in the picture posted by Dick Henry is definitely different than the assembly in our 1997.  I do not recall seeing any plastic gears in any of the actuator assemblies, so they apparently changed the design after 1997.  The gears inside the footrest actuator of our 1997 were metal.

Plastic gears frustrate me.  I know they can be a intentionally designed weak point to fail and prevent other items from failing, but many times it appears it is just to reduce cost.

Plastic gears not OK, agree, but a shear pin is a better solution, doesn't leave me pissed at the end Mfg.. and needing to spend .  Big $$ rather than .25 cents.  & a Day [or week] getting to & Fro on this little gear box.

My days in PT  [58-68]  shear pins for little stuff like this, very common.

The replacement assembly FOT sells is called a "2START, Retro Kit Gearbox". We paid around $200 for it. :o  This comes with the gearbox and screw. The new screw is a single lead, as opposed to the original double lead and, I would estimate, is about 1/3 the effective pitch of the original. No doubt, they did this to reduce the load on that plastic gear. The rub is that it makes the leg rest movement, IMO, painfully slow. Fortunately, the occupant of that seat has no problem with the speed. If she's happy, I'm happy.  8)

Daydreamer:  You motivated me! Or it could have been my wife.  I had previously sprayed with wd-40 and it worked for a little while and gummed back up.  At the time I didn't realize wd40 was not a great long term solution.

Flipped seat off of pedestal, removed 3 bolts on screw extension for leg rest. Cleaned mine with brake cleaner as well and re-lubed with silicon spray.  Comes out so fast now I might be able to use it as a weapon!

I am guessing your wife is a much better motivator.  :)  You better warn her about how fast it come out now so she does not spill her hot coffee ...or other beverage of choice!

BTW, silicon spray might not be a very long term lubricant....I like it for window tracks, door hinges, etc, but probably needs to be re-applied frequently for the leg rest.

I used a silicone paste.  I wanted something with a high melting point so it would not melt and drop off on the carpet in the summer..

Thanks to all, am going to dig into it this week,
Solution 1, clean up etc.  we have action again.  Several (my days)  little panther piss of some kind.
Solution 2,  Foretravel  part & forget it. Clean/lube every thing else. Still have ratty looking seats.
Solution  3.    Buy 2 new chairs, with the queen size going to standard, new upholstery, shoulder 3 point seat belts, etc.
Help us enjoy the coach, wont bring another +$$  when time to sell comes.

Will be interesting  to see what happens, (what we do)  we will work a decision tree, what if's.

Our govt. is sending $$ that we really don't want to saddle our kids with paying back.  So partial can go in the MoHo pot?.

A Heart felt THANKS to every one, for response.  A great group.

Get a little lost in the system.  I am the founder, numerous have replied always with goo info.  We had considered options mostly new chairs, both sides with shoulder or 3 way or whatever belts.  We had the lap belt that was way early Texch?

Bottom line got the motor, triple reduction gear assy out, various said clean it up, get the 20yr grease out for the 2nd gear assy.
They were RIGHT. It worked on the bench, lose but worked/
Thought it over last guy owned it 2 yrs or less, put a new on Onan etc, [close to [$20,into it]I can spend $250 for this box assy which i did. [1 air bag blew, [$3000 all 8] plus flooring, couch recover $10,000].  We love it.
I digress,
Got the new one from FT, set it all up on the "Bench" quiet, little slop.  HAPPY Happy put it back in, pushed the button, noise no movement.  Bottom line it worked fine, ON THE BENCH
REST OF THE STORY
Am 83, always forever a project.
1st on this, no stop on bottoming the seat.
2  Carpet gone,  new surface arms were bottoming, Queen 4-10"-100# stuck system gave up??
3  I did not understand, never sat in that chair, see a switch indicating <> assume that puts it up down,  WRONG
4  Tilted the seat back, from Pedestal, oiled greased everything, disconnected after rest would not move  <> noise no move.
5  Gear has failed, took whole thing out, to whatever tested, moved, cleaned better but loose,  thus my program  new available do it.
6  Put it all back in./ together,  would not move, queen helping.  As i was on the underside, looking had her punch the forward buttons which dont have arrows, back fro like it was new.  These buttons cause of wire size 12-14, I  assumed were for seat heaters,??  The wiring to the actuator motor is 16, +-
<>  as I think about it possibly a "lumbar Support"  will follow up on that thought but its motor running tricked me into a few hours work.
83,  Laying on your side in -60f weather inside the barn.

ALL THIS I CALL, taking a lesson, plus a good work out.

Now if we could get CV 19 shots.

Next project get that 1930s fan in the kitchen gone.

NM-Co, for the summer,  Durango area..

Happy trails, U-all  Bill
