water pump blows fuse

Went to turn on water pump and no green light.  Checked fuse on panel in basement and found breaker tripped.  Reset breaker and turned on switch.  Green light on for approximately 5 seconds or so and went out.  Breaker tripped again.  Any ideas? So we are on city water now where we are staying.

When you turned the water pump on did the pump run before the breaker tripped?

The 15 amp circuit breaker is between the power distribution bus and the water pump and fill valve latching relays. Power goes through the water pump latching relay (when it is latched) and from the #2 terminal to the pump and to the indicator lights.

Disconnect power to the pump either at the pump or at the latching relay, reset the circuit breaker and turn the pump on to see it the pump is causing the breaker to trip.  If it does not trip then the pump motor is going bad or has gone bad.  If it does trip then you have a short somewhere else, perhaps at an indicator bulb connection.

It is possible that the latching relay is failing as well or is stuck.  These have a finite life, I just replaced one.

Roger,

I think that if this U270 is like mine, it only has one water pump on/off switch.  Would it have a latching relay?

Rich,

You are correct.  I only have one switch.  So does this latching relay apply to my coach?

Roger ....... thanks for the suggestions.  I will look at this tomorrow.  The day got away from me.

If the water pump switch is on on/off switch then no latching relay.  If it is a momentary contact switch (push button) then there probably is a latching relay. Do you have a water pump switch in the wet bay?  The latching relays are used to allow multiple switches to control one function from several locations.

Roger,

The only water pump switch is in the bathroom, next to the water heater (on propane) switch.

Dave/Rich,

On older 270s with 1 switch they had a standard cube relay (rather than a latching relay) that the switch operated.  The switch energized the coil which closes the contacts which carries the high amps of the water pump as the on/off switch wouldn't carry the load. This is the same function that a latching relay does but only for just 1 switch rather than multiple. Here is what you are looking for:  Amazon.com: 5 Pack - EPAuto 30/40 AMP Relay Harness Spdt 12V, 5-PIN SPDT...  I posted these as you may find that you need a new pigtail.  If your socket is good then look for just the relay if this is what your coach has.

It could be hid down by the water pump or on the 12vdc distribution panel in the basement.

I reset the breaker, turned the switch on.  Switch lights up.  After about 6 seconds the breaker trips and the green light goes out.  The pump did NOT run at all during the 6 seconds.  I reset once again and turned the switch on and off at approximately 1 second intervals and it tripped the breaker in about 8 seconds total (cumulative time).  If I do have a standard cube relay, is it also located on that fuse panel in the basement?  Could a faulty pump cause the breaker to trip?
