toilet id 2006 numbus 336

Trying to trouble shoot this toilet.  Can any one identify the Make and Model.

It smells and I am trying to identify the source.  I have looked on the Forum and many posts about toilets but not this one.

Have you checked to see if your AAVs (air admittance valve ) is working? Each drain line in the coach has one.
 I have the same toilet and haven't had any smells in the 8years we've owned it.

I installed a new air admittance valve in the bathroom sink this last trip.  That was not the problem.

That is why I am looking at the toilet.  I would like to try replacing the seals around the base.  And look to see is there is another place for a leak.  The bowl holds water so I can see no way it is leaking there.  I do not want to dissemble it without parts.

Running the vent fan helps a little but I think it generates a vacuum that actually pulls more gas into the unit.  I think running the vent fan on the microwave makes it worse also.  So I have been cracking one window when using the vent and that seems to help.

I cleaned the black tank the trip before.  Used product designed to clean the black tank.

I am assuming the toilet is vented through the roof.  I have never seen one vented with an Air Admittance valve.

Have you also looked at the shower and the washer/dryer ones (if you have a w/d)?  If you have a w/d and have not run it in a while, that can also be a source of "stinky coach syndrome".

Shower is on the other side of the hall and does not smell. 

The washer is in bedroom and does not smell "Have not tried the washer yet".  The second wash basin is in the bed room and does not smell. 

Only the room with the toilet and a wash basin smells.  I changed the admittance valve on the wash basin in that room and did not help.  So I am looking closely at the toilet but I cannot identify the make and model.

The toilet is a Thetford Aria II.

Thank you very much.  Yes it is the Atria II Deluxe II

Looking at the parts diagram there is a device called a vacuum breaker. I am not sure what it's function is.  There is no connection diagram just the parts breakdown in the Owners manual.  It is too close to the wall to see much behind it.  Tried cell phone not enough room to control it.  And a bore scope same there.

Might just have unbolt the thing and check it out.

Anyone know what the vacuum breaker is for?  I am Looking for a technical manual now. Have the owners/ part manual. It's trouble section goes about as far is does it have water and is the hot wire connected.

No more technical manuals just the owner/installation manual I have.  Looking at some documentation for replacement part installation it looks like the vacuum breaker is not the likely culprit.  The vacuum breaker mounts on top of the water valve.  The water is delivered by three hoses to the rim of the toilet.  When the valve shuts the vacuum breaker allows air to enter and the water in the hoses to drain into the bowl.  Also called the water saver in older manuals.  If it fails there would likely be water leakage. That is not happening and would not allow gasses to escape from the holding tank to living space anyways.

If the toilet is involved it is likely the base seal. But that generally leaks water onto the floor which does not seem to be happening.  Going to do another clean of the black and grey tanks to see If I can improve the situation.  If it does not improve will remove the toilet and replace all the seals.

I hope it is not a leak in the holding tank which is located directory below the toilet.

I might of found the problem. 

Found how to keep the flush valve open.  Changed the mode switch.  Now the valve will stay open as long as I hold the flush button.

Looked in with a flashlight.  I saw what looks like a wax seal squeezing around the hole.  This toilet does not normally use a wax seal.  Bad repair??  Some one patching it up or not knowing.  I need to pull the toilet and see what type of Jury rig is in place.

I had a problem with my  wife smelling odors from the toilet area.  Not same toilet as yours, but maybe will have the same solution.

The previous owner had "worked on" the toilet and rolled the wax ring when the Microphor set back down on hub.  This kept the seal from completing and allowed odors to escape.  The replacement has lasted for the last few years

Wax rings are not great for motorhome toilets rumbling down the highway and vibrating all the way.

Another common issue is the bowl not holding water.  For anyone with odor issue while driving, check to see if you have water in the bowl, thus sealing odors from the black tank going up around this bowl seal. 

If this is a problem, a temporary solution is to use a product called "Happy Campers".  It may cure the problem until you get the seal replaced.  It did on mine years ago driving fro AZ back to Oregon.  Wife said get rid of that odor, or I am flying home, not going in the rv.. Happy Campers eliminates the odor, not just covering it up.  I've continued to use it ever since.

That sounds correct to me.  We learned from experience that it is not wise to have the bathroom vent fan running at the same time we flush (IE when we open a 3" hole looking down directly into the black tank).

If you cannot solve the problem in any other (less expensive) way, there are power devices available that keep the holding tank ventilated (under negative pressure).  I have no personal experience, but sounds like it would work, at least in theory.  Just offering you another option.  One example below:

Thanks for the suggestions.

 I am using the packets available everywhere. They have a purple powder. What I have used for the last 30 years. Do not remember the brand right now. They use to have formaldehyde in them. Not any more. That is likely the problem.

One packet.

I am going to check the seal under the toilet. And likely try another product.
