Moved topic to the Renovations board -

there are several folks who have done it, including what to watch out for when selecting a replacement unit and especially the installation challenges.

Going with a similar model number Sharp is going to be by far the easiest option.

I found that all the models I looked at in the store at Home Depot did not have a top vent that lined up with the hole in the cabinet above. Sharp seems to be the odd man out with where they position the top vent. I discovered this the hard way after ordering a z-line. I ultimately wound up with another Sharp. I agree with Michelle, by far the easiest installation option; I was even able to reuse the back mounting place that was already installed.

Most all are front vent, so that is the least of the problem. I don't know on yours Bruce, but we had an issue with the door hitting the cabinet. We had to find one that has a space to the left to clear (the way it's hinged).

Had to take one back, or would have had to cut the right side of cabinet off.....Found ours at Lowes.

Most can be flipped to be front vent or top vent. I'm not sure why one would want to convert to front vent though. I'd much prefer to have it vent outside in such a small space.

Bruce, any model microwave will work!  They are all 29 7/8 inches approximate.  We installed the Samsung in ours and very pleased with the upgrade!  Sometimes you can even leave the old wall mount in place and install your new microwave on it.  The Sharp had some screws that are hidden, but the new ones will be two bolts that drop down from the top cabinet.  Easy DYI!

As others have said, any 30" over range model will work, but there are many that door have the door offset and it will hit the sidewall when trying to open. I put in the Sharp and it was a simple swap.

if you end up with a sharp, the carousel R1874F is a very easy swap.

My son and I swapped out the old sharp for a new one from Lowes. Easy enough to do. Search for the thread. I like it just fine. I use the convection oven more than the microwave. I don't need it vented as I have a great exhaust fan right over it.
