Injector leak/P pump and mods to Cummins C engine

It's been 40 years or so since I've removed and replaced a Bosch P pump but as I remember, I had to use a combination of a 13mm socket, a 1/4" drive with a universal and a couple wraps of electrical tape wrapped around it to keep it little flexible plus a 3/8" ratchet with an adapter on it. There are three ears on the pump and a support at the other end. All of it is very difficult to get at, especially if the engine is hot. It takes about 30 minutes total time to remove the pump including removing the injector pipes.

Replacing is pretty easy but the degrees on the harmonic balancer have to be right on and then the pump can be put in place centered on the studs and the nuts lightly installed so the pump can be rotated slightly to accurately time the injection. There is a injector tube tool that goes on #1 to time it but I like a little compressed air to blow off any diesel coming out of the number 1 outlet while I turned the engine over with a bar on the crank nut. It would be perfect when the diesel first showed itself in the outlet. Time to replace the pump, time it and secure all the injector pipes was an hour and a half maximum. Two days seems crazy. Since the lift pump may be bolted on the P pump, there is only a couple of fuel lines to R&R. Even with a remote lift pump, that can't take any time at all. Two days seems a very long labor flat rate at a charge of $150/hr.

For some, an almost $10K charge to replace an injection pump may not be a big deal but for others and I expect many others, a $10K bill for a leak would be like being admitted to the hospital without insurance.

We have a hundred other interests and many places in the world that we have not seen yet. That's why a great deal of time was spent buying our U300. Other than diesel and insurance, the cost of any required repairs in 13 years has been close to zero. In case it does need some work, I'm the one that's going to fix it.

Quick search shows 9 to 10 hours shop time for 8.3 or 8.9 caps fuel injector pump swap is a typical rate than add for lift pump.

I recently replaced my Dodge 5.9 cummins VP44 injection pump for the 1st. time in 3 hrs. Watched a few videos and took my time, could do it faster next time if needed. The couple of shops I contacted for RnR wanted.$800.to $1000 labor.

Agree that you can do it in 3 hrs, however you don't have liability insurance or overhead to pay. I've worked in a rate shop and seen some do a job in half the rate time and another fella loose money. If the rate is 10 hrs and you take 14 hrs then you worked for 4 hrs for free.

Plus diagnosing time plus time standing at parts counter waiting for the parts  the clock is ticking there is time when a job is above are pay grade we don't have the experience for the job you have to let someone else do the job and plus you have one year  warranty which you have to pay for in the price plus there was other things done and probably some pre-maintenance two that came along with the job but it does feel good when you can do the job yourself and save that money but that's life
